Inmates lose right to vote

I don't get why 'Oh dear'? Surely if you can punish someone for the crime they commit and return them, at the end of that punishment as rehabilitated members of society then thats better for us and them?

I think it's just an emotive issue, and I doubt if giving prisoners the vote would make any difference at all.

I believe thats swansea prison. Havent been to the restaurant myself, not sure i'd trust them not to add "special" ingredients of their own.
Many homeless people have in the past committed a minor crime so that they get a warm place to sleep and 3 meals a day.
When you have access to as much as prisoners do these days its a holiday camp not a punishment. They should have a room with a bed and a bog, thats it IMHO.

Are you going soft on them, then

What's with the bog ......... make them slop out.

If they ask for sugar in their tea give them the choice of one lump or two :bat:

Maybe that's part of the problem, and I'd probably be the same. But perhaps alienating the inmates so much that they don't feel part of society doesn't help much when they eventually get out.

Why should a released con receive more opportunities than joe public does?

As a person who has worked hard all his life I don't feel part of society anymore for lots of reasons so why should they demand it?

Someone mentioned mental health.
the only place to get treated these days for mental health is in prison!
its just too much dammed trouble to treat genuine needy people.

I don't think anyone has actually suggested that a released con should receive more opportunities, I certainly didn't.

Punishment should be the first part of a prison sentence, rehabilitation should be the second part - one without the other is pointless. There are too many going to prison, it seems to be the easy option for society. It's possibly cheaper in the short term (shorter than the term of office of a government) than investing to generate lawful opportunities for everyone.

But something that really gets to me is that the private businesses that are now running prisons are now being allowed to use the inmates as a workforce at below the minimum wage for the benefit of those companies. With no real benefit to society.

Well according to Vicky Price, all of the people she met in prison were model citizens and the majority had done nothing wrong and were only in prison because of men.

That being the case they should all be released at once!

As for the vote, I am on the side of those that would not allow prisoners the right to vote. Nor would they be provided with gyms,TVs,etc. In fact I would take away their bedding and only allow a change of straw every two months. Those who wished to go on hunger strike should be facilitated without delay and all should be allowed to take shoelaces, belts etc into their cells.

The last part from my experience is not true. My daughter has had great treatment on the NHS for her problems. Again I know it can be a bit hit and miss but apart from one occasion I truly can't knock the NHS.

The right to vote would be the last thing on their mind.

nah, just wouldnt want to put the prison staff through having to deal with the smell :gag:

At long last common sense!!!!

If I had anything to do with it....... Prisoners would get sweet FA..... apart from bread, a little cheese (if they are lucky as it is so bloody expensive these days) and water......just enough to keep them alive so that they can suffer the way there victims have been made suffer.......no exercise time...total lock down.....no visitors....... no rehabilitation because it doesn't work....no education....and no parole...

Dont get me started on Parole. When a convict is sentenced they should serve the full length of the sentence. For good behaviour and cooperation they will be released the day the sentence ends. For bad behaviour the sentence should be extended. Sentencing someone to 16yrs and releasing them after 8 is absurd!

See, if people who hold views like these are allowed to vote and have influence in the lives of others, then someone who couldn't afford to pay their TV licence should definitely be allowed to vote. ;)

It's obvious by now that any semblance of a true debate as to whether prisoners should be allowed the vote or not is long gone. It's degenerating into hate filled rhetoric.

I think they should be forced to watch the most boring TV 24/7 as a punishment

Imagine all the ads, TV shopping, countryfile, eastenders, and many more :)

Big brother live. That would be a deterrent surely.

Having had my dad involved in the service for a good few years, I suppose I have a biased view as over the years, heard how much easier it has got and had chance to use the prison gym.

You are now at a point where the G4S people have to call them Sir, when taking to court, Sir really.

So, 30 days and 12 days, which'll commute to 15 days and 6 days. Big deal. The law applies to them the same as everybody else, with or without disabilities. He knew he was breaking the law by doing what he did and has admitted it. I have no sympathy.

I have a life threatening coronary condition and if I never paid my TV license would I expect to get away with it. Would I f***. I pay mine and they should have paid theirs or done away with their TV. Simple.

Brash

Lot of changes on the TV licence landscape these days with Internet TV catch up etc.

The link to people imprisoned for non payment was from 1994 some 19 years back.

There is controversy building regarding both Capita (who collect the fee and enforce the collection from non payers) and the actual BBC remit to have the power to direct the enforcement.

The licence fee covers viewing of BBC "live" programme channels but not "catch up" programmes. Hence a growing realisation that the non payer has to be caught actually watching live TV. so not paying the fee is not enough. Even with an aerial on the roof as Capita seem to think.

Capita collectors knocking on doors have no legal right of entry to homes without proper court issued authorisation. The so-called detection equipment has apparently never worked and "live TV" has to be witnessed. Advice is bandied around that the front door just be closed on them.

Reading various sources suggest never allowing Capita collectors through the front door and not answering demands.

Strangely worrying as I too religiously pay my TV licence fee whilst frankly wondering why, as the content offered is shallow and poor. So maybe time for the BBC to be forced into commercial operation on proper business lines?

Would be good to know if any non payers are in clink these days?

On the penal population I have to fall into line and say that it seems morally wrong that prisoners having a cushy time in prison, is also perverse and should not be revenge, but be set at a level that reflects the crimes committed. Prisons shoul also not be places where homeless people who commit (sometimes) petty crimes in winter to get 3 meals a day and a warm bed.

I have always felt that prison should be a place that the inmates never want to return to, being a deterrence that is similar to that used in the USA of "3 strikes and you are out" so that on entering prison for a 3rd time the felon is never coming out.

I have a friend whose family had one of their own stabbed to death many years back in a random incident and the perpetrator has apparently never shown remorse and is out of prison. Who really got the life sentence? Closer to home my son was attacked from behind whilst talking to a fellow stusent (female). The attacker was 6'7" and had been drinkung all day and in his statement stated he attacked my son because he wanted to talk to the girl. Charged with GBH Secrion 20 (without intent) he pleaded guilty and got 18 months prison, reduced to 12 months for pleading guilty and suspended for 12 months subject to good behaviour. We discovered this was the second guilty GBH offence. My son had to have his eye socket rebuilt with titanium (the orbital floor was shattered and removed) he also suffered a traumatic brain injury. So justice was done...... eh?

Prison must be uncomfortable and unpleasant. Yes get rehabilitation in but also ensure that returning has consequences. In the case of proven mental issues which manifest in rage and violent episodes.... sadly as I might think we need to care for them, removal from society is a must. Might have saved a lot of people...
