Hi there...

As a personal study for my A-level I've decided to have a crack at Infrared photograhpy. I've checked my camera and its picking up the infrared produced from a tv remote so thats ok... however I'm now looking for an infrared filter. Having a look around I can see that Hoya do the R72 and Cokin do the 89B.

However I study physics and I sat down last night thinking about infrared and what i'd be able to produce in terms of physics, and i then realised that red is the closest thing to infrared in the visible spectrum, therefore if I piled high on red filters (which I already have) could I come close to producing Infrared images through red filters and save myself £20/£30?

It was just a thought, and I just wondered if anyone could shed a little more light (No pun intended :D) on the situation?

Cheers for taking the time to read. :)

no idea mate, red is a different wavelength to infra red - - but i have a 72mm red filter should you need more...............

as an aside - how do you check its picking up the IR from the remote control?

How on earth do you know the camera is picking up the IR from the TV remote?

A filter, i have the Hoya one, is the only way to go, however, the sensor in the camera has an IR filter on its surface so some weird effects are seen as some of the IR is filtered out.

If you have a 58mm thread on whatever lens your using your welcome to borrow it and try it out.

Don't you just hold down a button on the remote and take a picture of the sensor on the front while doing so?

edit; I should point out that I have just read this many times - I don't know it as a fact ^^

In theory the more red you use, the deeper the red becomes narrowing down the wavelength even more? If I can get something to as close as 700nm as possible then in theory is should get close?

Thanks for the offer but I use 52mm thread. I'll probably end up getting an infrared filter, but incoperate the red filters in my research to show try and error for the personal study.

To see whether your camera is picking up infrared, just stick the camera on your automatic mode (P) and then ISO 100, in a relatively dark room - so a shutter speed of a second/2 is produced and then when the shutter is open press any buttons on the remote into the camera, and then when you look at the image there will be light where the infrared would be for example i had lots of purple dots and lines where I'd moved the remote while the shutter was open and I was pressing buttons. Thats if you have a camera which has the filter on the mirror. I was reading up on it earlier and some DSLR's have it and some don't. - I think.

I am now in a darkened room with a camera and a remote.......I don't believe I am trying this:nuts:

It should work!

Right I now know what I need...

The local tog shop have the Cokin 89B P007, which is the slide version. But comes in at £30, but could do my a package with some other bits n bobs for £35.
However the Hoya R72 -the thread one- £40!

So i'll probably be staying with the Cokin set!

Any luck Paul with the TV remote?

20 hours later and the wife still wont let go of it:lol:

A wife with the remote control, now there's a novel idea :D I like the sound of it - Doesn't happen in my house. I can't prise the remote from hubby :(

E6 slide film, unexposed but processed is supposed to work. But you seem to be able to pick up IR filters quite cheaply on ebay.

I bought a cheap 720nm IR filter from flea-bay.
Does the job nicely. Helps that the GF1 is very receptive to IR light

YES!! Finally had my call from LCE group and my A007 is in! Going to pick it up a little later on! Even better news, I've now got tomorrow off 6th form so will have the whole day free to take IR pictures!!

WATCH THIS SPACE! ... I just can't wait to have a play! :D
