Yes
...not forever, mind. ;)

I got my operation tomorrow. I got 'attacked' about 6-7 months ago which shattered my eye socket, cheek bone and other bits of the skull, as well as damaging my left eye badly. I've been refereed to 2-3 different hospitals now and finally found this 'reconstruction unit' who is going to do the operation. It's taken 6-7 months to plan and organise for it, and it's a 8-10-hour operation (apparently).

They've basically done a 3D scan (x-ray) of the good side of my face, flipped it horizontally and then they're using that scan to make a metal frame which will be bolted to my skull. This frame will be my eye socket, cheek bone and a few other bits. They'll then need to position my eye correctly as at the moment it's 2cm lower than it should be, as well as being 2cm deeper in my head as it should be.

That's a very simple version of the events anyway, it's a lot more complicated than that, and unfortunately that doesn't stop with the operation... But hey-ho, life can be a biatch.

I'm not sure why I'm up at 3:15am -- I have to leave for the hospital in about 2-hours as the operation is meant to start at 8am. Still, I suppose it's good being tired as I'll (hopefully) be able to sleep through a lot of the pain. I haven't been allowed to eat or drink since 9pm yesterday. :(

I just thought I'd update you all basically saying why I won't be on for a few days. But rest assured, when I'm back I'll need to spend a lot of time resting so I'll hit TP hard.

Hope it all went well.

If it didn't, do you want me to make sure that your wife doesn't sell your camera gear for what you told her it cost?

Cheers for the comments guys.

I woke up yesterday feeling quite well. Surprisingly well, and wanted to go home almost instantly... They wanted to keep me in over night and then the pain started to get worse and worse. My face looks like a hamster at the moment -- it's so swollen on one side. Half of my face is completely numb (including half of my nose and my top lip). They said this may well be permanent which would be awful, I can't even begin to explain how bad that feels.

Anyway, the eye is in the right place now but I can't really tell how good the job was as my face is so swollen. I'm due plastic surgery now to make everything a bit prettier but I've excepted I'll never look normal again.

Glad alls gone well! swelling always takes a while to settle but you have done well getting back online so soon, anyway there's worse things than looking like Timothy Spall LoL
How long did the OP take?
Cheers
Brian

Just over 7 hours apparently. They done shift work.

Glad your up and about Luke, best wishes for a speedy recovery :)

Just noticed the thread. Hope everything went ok and your on the mend soon.

and I hope he sneaks in a pos for a theatre nurse to take some pix. We must have photos. :D

it sounds like it was a pretty serious attack, I hope the guy that did it is being touched up in the prison showers as I type this.

when my son was born my wife had a planned section as he was breach, I was in the theatre while they did it, i'd taken my camera, a Minolta 700si in to photograph my son when they'd cleaned him up.

One of the nurses asked if i'd like some pictures of him being born so being a bit awestruck I just said yes.

god knows what they thought at boots , when I got them back it was like a scene from Alien:gag:

when our daughter was born they said as my wife had a section previously it would be advisable to have another but this time I watched them do it, it's an amazing job surgeons do , I watched the doctor cut her open while chatting to the rest of the staff like she was servicing a car.

I looked at her and thought how can you just do that, If I check the oil on my car i'm panicking i've done something wrong, the thought of complicated surgery would scare me to death.
