i'm fuming.....

yes and I have also seen the trouble you can get into for hitting a 17 yr old who is a minor.. its not worth it..

please get off your high horse and dont call me a bleeding heart liberal... i was thinking more about the OP and what could happen to him rather than worrying about the 17 yr old...

No high horse here :p

A kick is out of proportion to a punch in the face? Sorry but what you are advocating is capitulation to bullying.

My thoughts exactly, this incident might just prevent it happening in the future against someone who can't/won't defend themselves.

Fighting back is THE ONLY WAY these scum are going to learn to have some respect.Id try and find out where they live and bombard something of theirs with snowballs.

Most people are ignorant to how much camera gear costs. They shouldn't have thrown the snowballs but you baited them then assaulted one of them :( not a good idea really.

I hope the rest of 2010 improves though and i hope no damage was done to the kit :)

Surely its not assault but self defence.?

Having snowballs thrown at you is a form of assault, then to be punched.

My problem is that I wouldnt have walked away but gone for the others..!! :nono:

thats my point.. you didnt know if you where kicking a minor or an adult.. the difference is quite amazing.. and as i pointed out .. my thoughts are for you not the 17 yo :)

fair point kipax..but if they all had started on me,what am i to do..just let them kick the hell out of me,or try to outrun them[i was loaded up with all my kit etc, plus i'm 48 yrs old..so not the quickest on my toes].if it's a "them" or "me" situation...no brainer really.

i don't make a habit of this.i can assure you.

Always a bit dodgy with 'minors' as some of them are fairly big these days.

If it was a real hard snowball 'pelting' I doubt I would have just walked away - I'd have had words.

I think a swift single kick in the vegetables isn't really a heavy handed reply if you've been punched. It would be a bit different if you'd given one of them a right going over.

I've not read all the posts, but from a quick scan I get the impression there is a large majority who need to get a grip. They swung for him, he defended himself.

It's all this over-sensitive nannying b*ll***** the keeps the 'yoof' in control and untouchable that really winds me up.

Stan, don't feel bad about what happened. I'm assuming all your camera gear is safe, and you've helped teach a nasty little child that he can't get away with assaulting someone unscathed. I think most people would applaud you.

If it was my son who came home and told me that story I'd have clipped him round the ear and told him not to be an idiot. If he threw the first punch he deserved everything he got, so I say good for you Stan.

I'm going to upset a few people on here, but it's a snowball ffs!! We used to throw snowballs at cars and people, and get chased, when I was young - we didn't think 'oooo...thats an expensive car' or owt, as I we launched our attacks, and I guess somebody with a camera would be an even easier target!!

If I'd have been there, I'd have put my camera away, and launched into a full blown snowball war with them, or returned later manned up for another snowball battle!!

Different times appear to have different ideas about what is acceptable and what is not. If your camera had been damaged, how would you feel?

Your words "i put down my camera and front up to them to see how brave they would be then"
Thats HOW!

perhaps a poor choice of words on my part....

yes,i put my camera down...i was using my A700 with 70-400G lens on a monopod,so i didn't want to risk it any further.yes,i walked up to them to question them as to how they thought it was okay to "assault" me with snowballs...normally they would just shut up,but not these scrotes...perhaps you have a few grand to replace your kit,and would be happy to do so..however,i'm not lucky enough to be in that position.

There is no excuse for the punch, and I would never have stood up to an adult in that way even at that age, but I can't help but feeling that if the OP had retaliated with a snowball, instead of a verbal lashing, that the situation might have diffused itself, though I understand you taking the action you did Stan - if I'd been punched, I'd have done the same!!

Fabs, are you telling me that you always thought about the consequences to your actions when you were a kid, as I don't believe you!! You never played 'knock and run' or anything like that when you were a kid?? If you did, did you think about the old person you scared the living daylights out of???

A kick is out of proportion to a punch in the face? Sorry but what you are advocating is capitulation to bullying.

Not at all - what I'm saying is that a kick is out of proportion to being pelted with snowballs - and THAT, I am certain, is how a court would view it.

It would have been more than a kick if they had done that to me.
Good on you Stan - will teach them a lesson I hope!

Are you really saying that you assume every kid behaves in an irresponsible and dangerous manner with no regard to other people? I assure you they don't and neither did I.

The problem is this bloody politically correct world we live in.

A few years back my friend saw a child (about 12-13) stealing his car stereo so he chased him down the road and caught him. He held his arm, got his stereo back and escorted the boy back to his house to call the police. Because the boy struggled a little his arm encounted one small bruise.

This led to an initial prosecution by the parents but the boys parents finally saw the wrong in their child and dropped the case. The little scrote caused mayhem for my mate for a while.

Lack of respect is all it boils down to.

Well done Stan (Mark) for your actions. Hopefully they have gained some respect for you...... probably not.! Keep looking over your shoulder when out cos I'm sure they will gang up on you if they had the opportunity

Stan, get the camera dried out, get yer feet up for the day with a Glass of malt and stick that one down to your bad day of 2010. Tomorrow`s gona be a better day...Dont let B:'#@ get you down.

It wasn't just snowballs though, ignore the snowballs, he was physically assaulted and then reacted.

Think you need to read the OP again

stop trolling

Two A700s plus lenses. I know stan has a Sony 70-200 f2/8 so I think £2.5k is being conservative if anything

cheers marc..

chaz..

indeed,i had both A700's with grips,70-400G,70-200G,plus all my other lens excluding my 105 macro[no room in bag]...all which can be viewed in "my camera bag" in my profile...so a lot more than 2.5K[was quoting what i was using at that time]

For those who don't want to read the thread.

1. Stan was taking photos.

2. Stan had snowballs thrown at him (and therefore his gear too).

3. Stan went for a chat with the snowball throwers.

4. One of them threw a punch at Stans face.

5. Stan defended himself.

If that was all it was these days I don't think most wouldn't be too concerned. I'm sure since the beginning of civilisation young adults have caused havoc, mayhem, stress and damage, but most was without the intention of direct harm... It's different now when you have these kids who are more that happy to physically assault people as part of their fun.

So not 2.5K worth of kit then....

Sorry, I think you're picking up on the wrong part of the story there.

...I hope both your gear (and his) remains in good working order:)

God bless
Dave

I don't. Britain doesn't really need another generation of Jeremy Kyle "guests". It didn't need the ones we have now really.

I'll put my 0.02p worth in and just say well done Stan. I'm glad some people can stand up to these kind of people. I couldn't even stand up to them when I was the same age and I don't think I could now. But if I had to I'd give it a bl**dy good try. It's kids like that who give a bad name to young people today and it's about time they were brought down a peg or two.

Stan is the man, good for you standing your ground, don't let the nay sayers spoil your day.......:bat::bat::bat::bat:

Hope you did a risk assessment beforehand, in triplicate, and told them of their rights.

jeez guys....i never expected all this to happen.thanks for all the support and best wishes i've recieved..all appreciated.i can see this from all sides, and to be honest, expected all the above....not everyone is ever going to agree on this.as i said,i don't make a habit of having to defend myself, and would normally walk away and ignore it.i just expected them to pipe down and walk away..not what happend,so i was forced to defend myself...period!

Excellent work. A nice kick in the nads in self defence is spot on. Congratulations for standing up for yourself. Shame you had your day ruined - I know what these sort of altercations can be like. Try to put it out of your mind and not worry about it any more.

Nice work Stan, these little oiks get off on intimidating people, but when confronted the otherwise 'hard' men seem to be more like little boys. If the one that swung for you was on his own then I bet he wouldn't of tried it, but was in fact showing off infront of his mates. The fact that you kicked him in the bowlacks is great because it gave him a taste of what he was willing to give you and also made him look an idiot infront of his mates, I mean, come on at 17/18 who would want to be reduced to their knees by a 40 year old, how uncool would that be!

As for all the 'he is a minor' crap, what if Stan had'nt kicked him, what if he had hit Stan and broke his jaw or he fell and knocked his head and was seriously injured, the yob would have been charged then. He got what he deserved and hopefuly learnt his lesson from it.
