Again misquoted out of context.
How would I feel if someone were to do my job for free? Slightly confused as to what I do is rather specialist and I doubt any people do it as a hobby.
I have given pics for free including to a readers pic of the day part of a paper. However if they want full unconditional copyright, they can pay for it at the going rates.
What I do is rather specialist too. I take thousands of pounds of highly technical equipment to a location, use technical and personal skills, backed up with my experience and creativity, to produce fantastic images that will make my clients money. I do keep seeing people try to do it for fun though...(invariably wasting everyone's time in the process...Hell, that's how I got my biggest client - a have a go hero took too many bad photos. The client learnt their lesson and now hires me regularly...)
readers pics competitions, fair enough. A pic of brad pitt that the mail would run in the front few pages? screw that, pay up
There is NOTHING wrong with taking photos and enjoying them, and submitting them for print for things like reader's pics, competitions etc, whatsoever! This is your hobby and I'm hardly going to tell a hobby mechanic that he shouldn't mend his mate's car! There's been far too many threads on here when people have felt that they 'should' charge for something that they did as a favour, just to appease 'the pros', getting into a tizz wondering if and how much etcetc. NO! go and take photos, enjoy them, please!
BUT know either when you are out of your depth and it would be better to leave it to the professionals (hell, ask if you can help out on the shoot, you'll learn stuff

) OR in this case, that you are in possession of a valuable thing and that (especially somewhere as truly objectionable as the daily mail) are making money from that, it is only right that they should pay for that - even if you donate the money to charity.
It will be very satisfying to see this case to a conclusion, hopefully with the DM forking out £2k to charity. They've already pulled one scumbag move saying that the 'case is resolved' by 'offering' to pay... the original invoice for 250! Serious dick move...
