Blame Steve Jobs.

Is that Steve "iHave many $m" Jobs?

Can't knock the bloke!

Ford did it the other way round in the 80's by putting the i behind the model name of its cars to impress people! and it worked!

wasn't that "ad-speak" for "injection"...?

Just to get a bit of history correct, Compaq were first to get this weird naming phenomena going with the iPaq in the year 2000; iPod was released in 2001!

So, I think we owe it to Carly Fiorina (Compaq CEO at the time) for this irritating bit of use of an "eye"!

Bah, I still blame Steve Jobs as the Apple 'i' is a lot more well known.
But it seems like he stole the idea from Compaq.
Shock horror! - A computer company stealing an idea from another :D

Actually, to further correct history, Apple's iMac was first introduced in 1998. :) This was followed by the iBook and then the iPod.

So it was Steve 'bloody' Jobs all along then!

Didn't see that far, unfortunately ...iStand corrected :p

Guess, SJ gets all the credit then  ... Doesn't stop me from wanting an iPad, iMac, iPhone (stupid me selling mine), iDesk and iCar (the two latter are in the R&D phase, in idreams).

"aye, aye", i see this is going to be a very i-nteresting thread. :D

I thought the "i" thing was derived from the word "interactivitiy" as various manufacturers use it to sell media-related products. Packard Bell did it with their iMedia PCs, and our dear ol' Aunty Been is doing it with their (admittingly very good) iPlayer.

Mind you, I may have to admit in being guilty of doing the same thing myself as I tag my photos, cartoons and weather forecasts with my own trademark label; "IDJ media" (even though the I is the first letter of my Christian name, but it's got that slight hint of an apple-related product!).
