Ford did it the other way round in the 80's by putting the i behind the model name of its cars to impress people! and it worked!
Just to get a bit of history correct, Compaq were first to get this weird naming phenomena going with the iPaq in the year 2000; iPod was released in 2001!
So, I think we owe it to Carly Fiorina (Compaq CEO at the time) for this irritating bit of use of an "eye"!

Actually, to further correct history, Apple's iMac was first introduced in 1998.This was followed by the iBook and then the iPod.
