I have an NS&I savings certificate which matures soon and I completed a form to cash it in. NS&I then asked me to complete a form with my previous name and my new name because the name on my application for the certificate was different to that on cashing-in form. This surprised me as I have not had any previous name.
After a phone call to NS&I I found I had used 'Dave' on the application to buy the certificate. The cashing-in form asked for "forenames in full" and I completed it using 'David'. This was the difference and because of it they could not proceed with my request to cash in.
Even though I could give all the reference numbers related to the cetificate, tell NS&I the email address I use with them and that I had asked for the cash to be paid into a bank account which NS&I have had the details of for years, the only way they were willing to proceed was for me to complete the change of name form and get it witnessed. I also pointed out that having a witness was pointless as, even if I had had a previous name, the witness would not necessarily know it.
I know they want to be careful with people's money but this seems a bit over the top.
I know I should have been more careful but I could not remember how I completed a form five years ago.
Hope no one else get caught out this way.
Dave
