I have an NS&I savings certificate which matures soon and I completed a form to cash it in. NS&I then asked me to complete a form with my previous name and my new name because the name on my application for the certificate was different to that on cashing-in form. This surprised me as I have not had any previous name.

After a phone call to NS&I I found I had used 'Dave' on the application to buy the certificate. The cashing-in form asked for "forenames in full" and I completed it using 'David'. This was the difference and because of it they could not proceed with my request to cash in.

Even though I could give all the reference numbers related to the cetificate, tell NS&I the email address I use with them and that I had asked for the cash to be paid into a bank account which NS&I have had the details of for years, the only way they were willing to proceed was for me to complete the change of name form and get it witnessed. I also pointed out that having a witness was pointless as, even if I had had a previous name, the witness would not necessarily know it.

I know they want to be careful with people's money but this seems a bit over the top.

I know I should have been more careful but I could not remember how I completed a form five years ago.

Hope no one else get caught out this way.

Dave

Luckily my Moneyboss has all our details in a safe place, so if we need to ring them we have them to hand. (2nd & 5th letter of password ...... etc) It's a fairly good system tbh, but as you say if you've deviated/forgotten a detail it's a PITA)
They keep asking for email for contact etc, but I prefer the post & paper trail.

Several years ago we rang either NI or another Govt. agency (forget now) & we either couldn't answer a security question or gave a wrong answer to a specific question, when a recorded message was activated saying they couldn't proceed with the conversation, then the call was terminated. I was initially p!55ed off, but thinking about it a few minutes later was actually reassured.

Had a similar thing when my mum died. everybody else excepted signed copy of the death certificate (for larger amounts) but NS&I wouldn't.

How did you manage to sort it out eventually? Solicitor needed?

No as it was premium bonds I just waited a year.

Well David or Dave or whatever alias you are using now......:D I agree bonkers checks that mean nowt. Had an issue with a bank account. after jumping through hoops they wanted a witness declaration - I said I could get the postman to sign it or a random person in the street, answer Yes sir and thats up to you if you want to do that? but what proof is that for you to verify who I am? I ask its the rules they said....

:ty: I said I can see you take my security very very seriously, I will have the bit of paper signed forthwith

Sign of the times if you ask me and just as bonkers as a box of frogs.
