Yes
Saw a squirrel outside, so quickly grabbed the D700 and 300 f/4, whacked it on the monopod and rushed outside. No sign of the squirrel so came back inside and started to collapse the monopod. As I did, I managed to knock the lever on the monopod head, and as the monopod was upside down, gravity did its thing and my camera and lens went slow mo to the floor...

Thanks to my lightning bat like reflexes, I managed to "thigh" it onto the sofa before it hit the floor.

Moral of the story, always use the little metal locking latch on the head!

Now where are those spare trousers..

lol i bet you froze for a few minutes just thinking what if :)

Good save. Isnt it awful when you're watching something slow mo to the ground. Even worse when you're helpless to do anything about it!

Good save.

The other day I put my 70-200 on and connected a black rapid strap to the body. Was was carrying other gear to where we were shooting and had it slung over my shoulder. Went to take a shot and it wouldn't focus. All of a sudden the lens came away in my hand as it wasn't locked onto the camera body properly. How it stayed on while we walked through the car park I have no idea, just glad it decided to come away while I was holding it :)

As an aside are you insured?

No, I used to be, but sold all my gear an never renewed it when I bought the gear back.
It would go on the house insurance if the worst happened here. I should look into it again as Im getting out with the camera more and more now.

I think you need one of these (from the Vitruvian Man tripod thread)

The quick release has a double lever system to stop accidental release.

The main lever won't move until the smaller one is pushed in.

It prevents undoing the plate by accidentally knocking it.

Then I use Arca-style plates with a screw release which is a little harder to knock, as long as you secured them properly in the first place.

The plate does have a secondary lock, that means you cant pull the release lever, but you need to "set" it before you start shooting. I ALWAYS, do this...
Except for today because I was rushing to get outside

Lesson learned.. No more rushing, no matter what the subject is waiting outside!

Sir Alex will be signing you up if he reads about this. A replacement for Van dar Sar so soon

I hate that arse clench you get when this happens, and I know exactly what you mean when you thighed it. Good save though.
