Saw a squirrel outside, so quickly grabbed the D700 and 300 f/4, whacked it on the monopod and rushed outside. No sign of the squirrel so came back inside and started to collapse the monopod. As I did, I managed to knock the lever on the monopod head, and as the monopod was upside down, gravity did its thing and my camera and lens went slow mo to the floor...
Thanks to my lightning bat like reflexes, I managed to "thigh" it onto the sofa before it hit the floor.
Moral of the story, always use the little metal locking latch on the head!
Now where are those spare trousers..
