I started a new hobby today! (Guitar)

There are so many Les Paul copies out there, they share very very similar specs and I think it's more what you prefer really. Life would be a bit boring if we all like the same thing :)

I just found this thread. So if I've got this right, you only started playing in January Raymond and you've already acquired two PRS's and two Taylors? Wow, that is serious GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) right there. Certainly beats the £18 Top Twenty from Woolworths that I started on.

Not sure I like the blue PRS actually: the bridge and tailpiece look really odd to my eyes, but like you say, each to their own. Personally I love my Les Paul, it's taken me nearly 40 years to finally acquire one and has always been my dream guitar, but things like children and mortgages always got in the way before. I've got a couple of Strats, an SG and a couple of acoustics too. Must get round to taking some pictures of the herd!

Come over and join us at The Fretboard sometime http://www.thefretboard.co.uk/ . Plenty of great advice to be had (there are guys there who build amps, pickups, guitars and effects. Also some seriously good players, guitar techs and even the odd pro) plus good banter and a decent classified section.

I have GAS indeed haha and yup, two Taylors and two PRS from January to June...still on the Yamaha THR 10 though :p

I love guitars, a little regret now why I didn't start out sooner but I guess starting now means I have the funds to go straight to the good stuff ! Although I am probably a little spoilt for choice now!

p.s. I'll sign up on that board too, it seems quite active :)

Nothing wrong with gas! Remember you always NEED one more guitar than you've got. :)

I've got a THR as well, although mine's the blues version. Great little things for home use. I've got a Marshall combo as well but it's really overkill these days, my gigging days were a long time back.

Yeah do sign up at The Fretboard, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've got the same username over there btw.

Not only that... also, you should never have got rid of that last one (or any of the others)!

Steve.
Ah don't start me on that. I've sold gear in the past and regretted it straight after. Not only that but some stuff I shifted on has subsequently got very collectable and valuable, especially effects pedals.

Steve.

TBH there's only one guitar I've REALLY regretted selling (a top end El Maya, bought new in '82 - brilliant instrument & never seen another exactly like it.) But otherwise, yes.

Oh, that and the original Pearl chorus I gave to a friend in the 90s - didn't sound exactly like the one I re-bought & am selling again now.

Having said what I did, I've just found a (terrible) image:

Obviously the Roland pickup doesn't belong. I also found a US ebay listing of one like this that sold for $726. It appears to have the same bridge fitted as standard to Washburn Hawk-series guitars made in the Yamaki factory in the late 70s/early 80s.

Swore I wouldn't get any more guitars but I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty from a guy locally about 3 weeks ago.

One of the nicer playing Les Paul 'style' guitars and at £150  it was hard to say no (y)

Fair does - I always wanted a custom when I was starting out, but never got one.

Can't argue with that, nice catch. What does she play and sound like? Nailed any Frampton yet?

I had quite a nice surprise when I played it - good sustain and a lovely rich tone - complements one of my other guitars nicely - a 1980's shredder (for want of a better description) Epiphone X-1000 which I fitted a Kahler trem to.

Nice collection. For sure a Les Paul would fit in nicely. What amp are you pushing it through?

I've just got two little amps these days - a Marshall Reverb 12 and a Line 6 Spider III 30

Well you should be able to make a nice noise with those... :)

That was guitar porn last night - James Hetfield (Metallica) at Glastonbury.

Not a Metallica fan as such but yeah, I enjoyed that.

You have to remember Metallica play to bigger crowds than Glastonbury on a regular basis.

Hetfield is a true gent and played it well. The set was a bit tame but they were proud to be the first metal band there.

I wish I could pull out a dream guitar for every song.

Oh yeah, I realise how big they are.

I suspect they designed their set exactly to appeal to people like me - open minded fans of music of all types.

J-Z did the same sort of thing a couple of years ago.

Spot on(y)

How are you getting on with your new guitar - two threads on the go make it a bit confusing.

It's been a year since I started this thread...thought I update.

Weekend just gone I traded in a PRS Custom 22 Special (actually a rare guitar in itself...) for...

A 2001 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop Class 5.

Very nice. Congrats.

I'm (usually) not a big fan of LPs BUT - that is gorgeous!!! I particularly like that it's not "over-blinged" with gold fittings.

Enjoy it :)

That's a nice upgrade Raymond.

I knew you'd get converted to having a proper guitar one day Raymond. * runs away* :)
That is proper lovely, good GAS!!

I have a friend who loves your guitar Class 5 Ltd Orange Tiger? (He thinks)
Although he is curious about one thing.
Are you 100% sure its a 2001 because he is pretty sure its a 2011 although its difficult to tell from a picture.

Just need a Twin to play it through now. ;)

@Raymond Lin that's a gorgeous new guitar, good GAS! I've got to say that having seen the vast magnificence of your gear on thefretboard (that custom wooden pedal board is gorgeous) I'm amazed its only been a year since you started (although I remember when you started this thread).

Lol From the Custom 22 Special?

It's not an upgrade in parts but upgrade in others.

It is now on sale here in World Guitars. No photo on their site yet but this is my photo of it.

I say only an upgrade in parts....in that aspect I would say the PRS has better fit and finish, has more tonal variety up its sleeve, 2 PAF humbuckers, a Lindy Fralin single-coil middle single coil, 5 way selector switch and coil tap.

You can have 10 different sounds by flicking the switches alone before you even play with the volume and tone knob. It is an extremely versatile and rare guitar.

The problem with that is actually exactly as I described, it was just too much...I get lost where I am half the time and since I bought a PRS 305 I didn need the single coil sound in the Custom 22 so it made way for the Les Paul. 3 way toggle and 2 volume and 2 tone. Just much simpler and easier to get good rock sounds from it. There are a lot of combination in the Custom 22 I never touch so it was there really doing nothing, a waste. Where as the Les Paul has less but they are like the greatest hits, each one of them.

It's call Tangerine burst. I am sure it is 2001, there is a piece of paper in the case with the date. I don't think they are in production anymore. I have actually email Gibson to find out exactly, emailed them the serial number on the guitar so waiting to hear back.

The case is pretty battered, the latches shows wear that is too oxidised for a 2011 guitar (the PRS Custom 22 is 2011). The case looks more like something over 10 years old.

Just need a Twin to play it through now. ;)

I don't have a Fender...I have a Bogner...does that help? :)

Yeah, the Salvage board is something else, I tend to do things both feet in...so I thought I might as well get something for life (a full blown Gibson Les Paul) and a pedalboard that will last a life time.

Oooh - very nice (y)

How do you find the weight / balance ?

The weight is very similar to my PRS Stripped 58, the Gibson weight in at 9lb 9oz. It's not light like my Custom 24 (7lb 2oz) but I think it is that weight which makes it FAT in sound. In terms of balance it's great, I play mostly sitting down though so not had a chance to use it prolong period on a strap yet, which I do have, a nice wide one. :)

I think I've just seen you over on the MyLesPaul forum.. If so, welcome aboard. :)

It's a very good resource for getting info on guitars in general and Les Pauls in particular. The Les Paul forum is also a very good place for info on Les Pauls.

Can I ask how effective you felt the Rocksmith learning thing was?
I am a complete 100% noob having pretty much never even held a guitar but like you I would love to learn an instrument.
Is it a fun way to learn?

As for the other comment earlier the reason my friend was curious is because he bought something similar which turned out to be a 2010 model based on a 1998 model. (if that makes sense).
So in essence he bought a 2010 guitar which he thought was a 1998.

Rocksmith is much more fun to learn than just practice chord changes. There are mini games which are basically chord changes in the game which helps. It is very effective as an learning tool, useless for reading music though.
I tend to flip between the game and Justin Guitar lessons, I have a book of his tool.
As for the date of my guitar, I am 99% confident it is not 2011. I have a certificate with the guitar and the age of the paper is gone that yellow shade for being old. Every bit points towards 2001 guitar, not 2011.
