Beginner I realise I'll get flamed for wanting to aquire yet another camera but...

The thing is, how much does a half decent compact cost?
If he sells everything he has, and saves up a little I’m sure he could find something. When I’m home later I’ll have a proper look and give some suggestions.

Surely there is no need to discuss half decent compacts or any other camera.

Just follow Lee's advice or just use the Canon.

For now.

If the Canon can produce good (acceptable) results then great, it’s at least half decent, but I believe he wanted video capability also?

The Canon does do video or at least I think it does

Yep, it does and the IS means its stabilised too, what's not to like?

I still have an old Canon A720is that gives decent results and this Canon is newer and at the time more expensive too

The SX20 was a competent camera in its time and still capable of taking nice photos. The others that have followed haven't really progressed much further as similar in age and cost.

Rightly or wrongly, people contestesd that a budget DSLR would be capable of taking nicer photographs than a budget compact, hence the D50. As yet, Rich hasn't been able to take a photo with it yet thanks to a zoom call with @stickytape. The requirement for HD video was announced after the purchase of the D50.

As Rich will be starting a part time job he could save up and buy something newer at higher price point, but meantime should practise his photography, as the Comic Con shows are approaching. Keep one of the compacts, either the Canon or Sony. If you end up with a dSLR, try it.

The TP collective wants you to enjoy your photography and I'm sure will help you with advice and beginner challenges.

Which it has. See post #31
Great, well that is the half decent compact I was referring to then. Happy days! :)

@MrRichAllen1976

The Canon SX20 is the one to pick up, get used to and take photos with I think. I started many years ago with a Fuji S9500 which looks to be a very similar spec camera.

Stick with that. Read, watch YouTube videos etc about the camera and its functions. I think I went straight to Av mode on the Fuji but I already shot film and had an understanding of exposure etc

Auto or P mode will get you started and get you familiar with things initially.

Okay.....

I'll admit I've given a few slightly sarcastic replies in your other threads.....

But hear me out, this is my honest advice to help you out.

In my opinion of course.

Firstly! Return THROUGH EBAY the faulty D50 and lens.
If you have a Nikon kit zoom lens (which I'm not sure on tbh) then take to Harrisons and buy a camera body for it - the £30 one.

Do not buy anything else! No more point and shoot cameras, no lenses. NOTHING!

Take the cameras you have already and take pictures with them, indoors side by side, same scene, same lighting etc

See which one is the best. Give that one 3 points :) Give the next one 2, etc

Go outside and do the same. Mark them again for performance.

Then you get a bit more technical.

See which one

Focuses the best?
Feels the best to use?
Is easiest to use?
Fits in your pocket?
What batteries do they take?
Zoom range?

Write ALL of these things down, make some notes.

Hopefully by putting in a few hours worth of effort, you can find out which one of your current cameras work best for you.

I don't suggest going outside this weekend though with Storm Eunice coming through ;)

This, :plus1:.

In my opinion, sound advice.

Rich, learn the gear you have have, get to know it, this will also teach you some ways of photography. After a little while, you'll be in a better position to know what you want to achieve and what gear you need to achieve it.

I'd also maybe suggest keeping just one of your threads going for now and keeping everything in there. That way, your story will unfold and develop and won't become disjointed by being spread over the forums. Maybe start a new thread in the Beginners forum for that purpose? There are people here who are more than willing to help you on your photography journey and help you progress.

The OP has a limited budget and AFAIK some thought that a smartphone would be better for vid than any camera in the OP's price range.

I guess it depends what you want to achieve - better pics, probably a smartphone. To learn, then a D50 will be fine. Its about understanding how SS, aperture and ISO work with easy manual controls. Maybe manual focus, what some of the different focus modes do etc... plus framing. Get to grips with that and then buy a 'better' one.

Sorry Simon, but the OP isn’t really at the stage of learning about SS etc as witness the confusion over the various lens purchases. He probably needs to start on automatic & framing..

Actually about 2 years ago I did an online Photography Diploma course on ShawAcademy.com (which turned out to be worthless) so I do know about apertures and all that bobbins.

OK that’s good to know. Are you confident about using your Canon, handling it and so on?

In which case it wasn't worthless.

Yes, just point and shoot, put the camera in video mood to shoot movies, and it's got a decent(ish) Zoom lens on it.
That’s good to know too! Is there anything you don’t like about the photos it takes — generally I mean, not all of them will be good, people move and so on.

Meh, I don't take pro level photos for profit, just selfies and pics of people dressed up at comic con type events, and movies of talent contests and Q and A sessions at Comic con.

So moving forward, what is your photographic ambition? Knowing this would help us to help you.

From various other threads, I think its taking good photos from Comic Con conventions, and being able to video for a private channel.

Good photos/videos that won't get ripped apart by trolls if I set my Google Photos/YouTube account to public.

At the moment I have my YouTube content set to private due to problems towards the end of last year with trolls posting nasty comments on one of my recent uploads.

I’m afraid there are nasty people everywhere (except here of course, because the Mods chuck’em out. If you like the phots/videos just ignore the trolls.

Is it not possible to turn comments off on YouTube?

Sadly there will always be people who want to tear others down and belittle anything others do. It's just a sad fact and especially so on the net. Decent people, your family and friends and good comic con fans will no doubt appreciate what you do no matter how good or how bad you do it. So maybe leave the comments on private or can you just allow certain people to comment or just block the trolls when they pop up?

Good luck with it Richard but I do think it'll help to develop a thick skin and just block or ignore the trolls.

Don't let the trolls ruin your fun/hobby, just turn the comments off and youtube also recently removed the dislike counter for people to view.

Even though you admit that you need to learn Richard, please don't let trolls try and ruin it for you as at the end of the day YOU ARE A PHOTOGRAPHER and you'r willing to learn so in my eyes that is great.

OK, well, I think it’s better that you learn the intricacies of your present Canon, which is more than capable of giving the results you want to achieve. All cameras need understanding and all cameras can give bad results. Build up your skills until you are able to quantify the deficiencies of your present kit. Easier said than done, I know, but you’ve already proved that you have the capability to do this by managing to secure a job.

Probably but then he may wish to get ”likes” so it would defeat the object. You can share only with invitees I think so that would be one way to go.

Enough is enough! Don't start multiple threads on the same subject.
People are offering you advice, you ignore it, and go and start another thread, which helps no one least of all you, with the information
you are getting, being diluted.
I've locked the rest, of the similar threads, just use this current one for questions.

There are a lot of knowledgeable people on this site, listen to what they say, or don't
its your choice.

But I'm telling you now, any other thread on this (these) subjects will deleted on sight.

The settings are fairly flexible. You can block specific people, or hold all comments for review before you allow them to be shown, or automatically hold comments Google thinks may be inappropriate. You can also post an unlisted video that only someone with the link can comment on.

I agree* with the general principle but this should be in Beginners then and perhaps a more general title?

*and am grateful, I’m getting out of breath rushing from thread to thread :(

Beginners then and perhaps a more general title?
Prefix added, but there is no reason to move it out of talk equipment as that is what he is doing ...
As for the title anyone that has been following his threads, knows "the score"

It is and normally I do (meh, it's not my fault or problem that 70% of the Internet hates me for reasons I can't help like being on the Autism spectrum and unable to work full time as a result of being on benefits)

So 30% of the internet loves you then -- you’re doing better than most people!

No, due to physical and mental disability.

Please do not go all Daily Fail on me about that, I cannot help my personal circumstances.
I'm not going to go all daily fail....
You've explained why you can't work full time, but previously you said you couldn't work full time due to you being on benefits.
It was a genuine question, I wasn't having a go at you.....

As you have said in another thread, you're happy with your current Sony so stop wasting your money. How much have you spent so far on the wrong stuff due to rushing in?

Too much! :crying:

I looked it up yesterday, CEX gives £47 cash for the D50 just the body, I might trade it in tomorrow as there's new game I want, came out yesterday that's about that price.
