As I missed out on Undertakers sale, I went out this afternoon with an open mind and an open wallet for a new Canon lens. I wanted quite a flexiblle zoom lens with the ability to do a bit of equine Dressage (have used 300 for this before with good results). I already have 24-105 L, nifty fifty and 135 L.

I had three lenses lined up, 70-200 f4 is usm, the f2.8 version and the 70-300is usm. I preferred the longer length but tried the L's with extenders. As the glass used in the 70-300 is usm is near on L quality. By the time you take into consideration the aperture change with the extenders, the only real advantage was the letter L. I was really suprised with 70-300 is usm and ended up with one! It isn't soft at either end and the detail is very good.

I cannot believe I walked away from the L - I just couldn't see that much additional benefit:)

p.s. sorry for the spelling mistake but I can't work out how to change the title!!

What sale was that:thinking:

Thanks guys :)
I saved about £600 overall but I'm absolutley amazed at the performance of this lens.:p

Galaxy66, I read reviews on the 70-300 and a sale popped up in the forum which I think Wills got.
My husband commented if I was going to get one I should get the right one for me from the start, hence the L's came on the scene.

I have the 70-300 USM IS and think it is fantastic. As you say, sharp all the way through.

Me too!
a quote from Photozone for this lens "So in terms of optical quality the EF 70-300mm IS can be almost described as a hidden Canon L lens."
I'm enjoying mine which I only recently purchased on this Forum.

70-300 is a lovely lens, when you are ready to 'upgrade' there's always the 70-300 DO IS. That beast is a peach of a lens. Using extenders on the 70-200 range is ok as long as you can anticipate your needs well in advance, the 70-300 for equine photography would be my choice.
