As I missed out on Undertakers sale, I went out this afternoon with an open mind and an open wallet for a new Canon lens. I wanted quite a flexiblle zoom lens with the ability to do a bit of equine Dressage (have used 300 for this before with good results). I already have 24-105 L, nifty fifty and 135 L.
I had three lenses lined up, 70-200 f4 is usm, the f2.8 version and the 70-300is usm. I preferred the longer length but tried the L's with extenders. As the glass used in the 70-300 is usm is near on L quality. By the time you take into consideration the aperture change with the extenders, the only real advantage was the letter L. I was really suprised with 70-300 is usm and ended up with one!
It isn't soft at either end and the detail is very good.
I cannot believe I walked away from the L - I just couldn't see that much additional benefit
p.s. sorry for the spelling mistake but I can't work out how to change the title!!
