the new astra due in september looks like a nice car, but its still only got a torsion beam rear suspension setup so its a match for the Golf or Focus when cornering

Disagree.
Current astra did nurburgring in 8:35, which (bar the RS which has 60hp more) pretty much trounced everything in its class.

IRS is not the be all and end all.
