Hyster's 52 (Night added)

I really appreciate the feedback Jean, thanks so much for taking the time to give me your thoughts, honest and candid feedback will always be extremely welcome.

Simple, a very simple elephant, well lit, not that bit isn't simple :D... Well done, I like it

i like it, nicely lit, good colour and i kinda like the two tone BG, having said that after reading Jeans comment i have to say i agree turning it slightly might have made it more 3d :)

Week 18 - I like the idea (pink elephant), but I feel really mean saying that I think it lacks a little impact - and I haven't even got any ideas on how you could do it differently.

The composition is attractive, the detail in the porcelain is good. I'm thinking as I type and after looking yet again, I wonder if turning the trunk slightly more towards the camera would have given a more 3-D feel? He looks rather 2-dimensional in profile. I think we all want honesty in this challenge, but I feel I've been a bit negative without being confident that I'm offering a 'better' alternative.

Sorry for the ramble - I should get my ideas sorted before commenting. :bonk:

Jean

I actually think that is very valid and constructive crit - I also like the idea but feel it's lacking a bit of oompf. Maybe a black background would give the ely a bit more impact too

I love the bacground, and think it works brilliantly, I want the glass elephant its beautiful. I agree with Jean in that a more 3D angle may give it more punch, and is a good observant comment.

Well done for this weeks shot, fab

God, I've seen some pink elephants in my time, usually in the early hours of the morning ;). None have looked as good as this one though. Very well captured and on theme.

Jon

Your Simple shot is, well, simple. Great lighting and a great texture on the elephant :clap::clap:, but as you described, not so simple to do

A good, creative take on the theme and a slight change in perspective would make it even better. I like it

Missed your 'simple' sorry :(

Its great - I do like the pink and the graduated background - simple indeed and nicely framed :)

Linear - ah now we're talking - a guitar (drool!) Nicely shot - great angle and great lines and the dof works well... I keep looking and it keeps drawing me in :) Nicely focused on the middle pick up :)

Another very good shot , good DOF and on theme ;)

John has summed it up, a superb interpretation of the theme that draws me in:thumbs:

:agree: You really do have a knack of getting the very best out of your DOF shots...:clap::clap:

and the B&W treatment adds even more to the shot...

Oh WOW!

I'd seen the last couple of comments at the top of the page before looking at the picture, so my anticipation was already sky high - and I wasn't disappointed!

If I was making and selling guitars I'd want that as an 'aspirational' advertising shot. It's superb.:clap::clap:

Jean

:clap: Linear fits the theme superbly. Love the DOF and the shot is excellent

Great DOF and PP on the conversion - nice work!:clap:

What John said!! Lovely shot.

Another theme and another great shot. Colour treatment, Dof, angles all fab. In fact this shot ROCKS!!! (sorry :exit: )

Well done again, like the colour, lighting and reflection in your "simple" shot.!
The "Linear" pic is amazing! great DOF and fits the bill perfectly! :) well done! the mono treatment works really well with it too!
Nice one!

Week 20

Emotion

That's a gorgeous portrait. :)

I like tight crops and for me, you've judged it just right. The angle of her head is nicely judged too. The lighting is gentle and fits the mood of the portrait. The emotion says 'Pensive' .

A classic shot that will stand the test of time.:clap::clap:

One very, very small niggle - I would clone out the dark spot in the catchlight in her left eye. Ring flash?

Jean

Its all in the eyes in this one - a lovely portrait - with an expression that could be read many ways - but certainly there's emotion there!

Very nice

Well done Hyster, a technically great shot.

I also like the way that you have no accompanying words as is leaves it up to the viewer to place their emotions on the shot...very clever!!!

Thanks Jean, hadn't noticed the spot, cheers for that.

Its not a ringflash but a homemade beauty dish, made out of a £2 Tesco's salad bowl painted white and a round shaving mirror bolted on!

Very nice

thank you very much John.

that sums it up for me

Thanks Ruth.

Thanks for that Angela.

I rather like that. The ambiguity of the emotion is interesting. Can't quite tell what she's thinking.

Great portrait...works so well in B&W...and well cropped.

nicely fits the theme, excellent Gary...:clap::clap:

What fantastic splash of colour (yellow is my favorite colour) so it works so well for me...:clap::clap:

another great crop and excellent dof with just the right amount of oof flower...Brilliant shot...:clap::clap:

Wow thats something else!!!

Thats an album cover waiting to be used! Love it - there seems to be blur and movement (or is that just extremely shallow dof) whatever it is it (for me at least) enhances the shot enormously!

I love the angle and the very tight crop - great impact. I'm a little undecided about the dof and the colour. (Sorry - it's not a criticism - more thinking aloud!) I wonder if the the shallow dof would work better with a less vibrant colour - giving a more ethereal look, or this gorgeous vivid yellow with a bit more dof?

But that doesn't detract from a gorgeous flower with a complex structure.

And it brought a smile to my face. :)

Jean

great take on the theme and lovely colours you have in there :D

Thank you very much.

Very kind Marcus, thanks.

Thanks, you are correct, its an extremely shallow dof. I used extension tubes stacked behind my 50mm to get the effect.

Thanks Jean, I took loads at a narrow aperture and they all looked, well, kind of boring, I took this one and when looking at my images after, I just kept coming back to it.

There are things about it that I know are wrong but I just like it for some reason I just can't put my finger on.

Glad the pic made you smile.

Gary mate you need to change your title for each week I nearly missed your shot for this week...

It certainly fits the theme alright, but it’s not your best work that we have all come to appreciate every week. There is nothing really wrong with it and the dof and focus are all what I would expect from your high standard. It’s just a bit flat, I know you really do like to hear what people think of your shots, so I’m not worried your be disappointed with my comments because I know you will push yourself a little harder next time.

Changed the title Marcus.

Really appreciate your honesty Marcus, I guess I was just so caught up in trying to catch the second hand moving just right, probably took my eye of the ball with the rest of it.

The only thing that could disappoint me mate would be an insincere "good shot" cheers for your feedback.
