Hyperfocal help for a thicko!!!

Yup, you've got it Sara

Here's a lens which shows you what aperture and focus point to select for the equivalent of P&S ease of use over this aspect. Line up the orange numbers with the caret and all will be hunky-dory. It's what I meant by "f/8 and be there".

The charts and tools are great for getting an understanding and if you want greater control over the depth of field, but if you want to maximise the DOF then use a sensible middle of the range aperture and a tripod, especially if choice of aperture has dropped your shutter speed in the prevailing conditions.

Realising that 1 or 2 of my recent posts may not have been that helpful, here's what I'd do.

Using auto focus, focus on the hyperfocal point. Switch to manual, re-compose your image.

Easy!

The image will probably look blurred in the viewfinder but don't worry about that. It should be sharp on the LCD.:)

:thumbs: cheers everyone, think i got it now...

now to wait for the weekend to try it out.

Chris

right... i think im getting a better understanding of this now.....

next question :D..............

when taking a photo and have all the setting set up, what do i do next? do i use auto focus and focus on my subject, or do i switch to manual focus and set to infinity / distance scale????

thanks again everyone for the help (sorry Swag for using your thread)

Chris

What I would do is switch to manual focus and manually focus at the hyperfocal distance. That's assuming you have a modern lens with no DOF scale and have ascertained the HD elsewhere.

a bit difficult isn't it when the distance scale is a few mm between 5m and infinity :D

why not find something that thereabouts in the range, extrapolated from the HD lock focus and shoot and try somewhere else lock focus and shoot.

by playing on my DoF program i found it doesn't really matter than much if you get the distance that little bit wrong (I am talking >3-5m)
