How to fix hood on 300 f/4 non IS

I just purchased a 300 f/4 non IS USM prime lens. Lens is sharp, so no problems with that. Only down side of the lens is that the hood is loose. As it is a pre IS lens, and therefore pretty old, the friction it relied on in the past is gone. The hood will move whenever you tilt the lens either up or down.

Is there any way to remove the hood and fix this ? Does Canon (or any other firm) still repair these lenses ? And if so what kind of ballpark figure I should be thinking of ?

Any help appreciated,

Erik

Hi Erik,

I'm not 100% on this...

When you pull the lens hood out, have you tried turning a small amount it anti-clockwise when it's fully extended ? On the IS version, this locks the hood in place.

As I said, not 100% abot it, but worth a try

I'm guessing you've got a 1991-3 (UF, UG or UH) built lens. The early 300/4's were different to the 1994 (?) onwards builds in the way the hood locked (I believe the new locking system for the 400/5.6 was then used in both models).
The later ones used the pull and 1/4 turn method and have a screw thread inside the hood unlike yours which was simply pulled and held by an interference fit.

Cadge a nice red rubber band from your postman and fit it just behind the hood in the extended position.....job done.
