how much?

Keep using that magic word. Student!

Most people hear it and they will let you in to areas because they think your not making profit. Where as if you were a pro a lot of people think your trying to make money and want a piece of it.

Also when people hear 'student' they feel sorry for you and know how hard it can be.

Good luck with it all!

thats what i've tried to explain if i say im a student (which i am) people will think its going towards new camera gear, books etc. whereas if i was a pro they would shut the door and have no interest whatsoever.

My first post sorry not sure what emoticons thingies to use.

this is my chat up line "hello, im 15 and a photography student who is trying to make some money to buy some new camera equipment, would you like to see my portfolio" and we talk etc. i was thinking of selling 4 for £5 as i make £1.25 per print and i think it would be cheeky asking to help a student and me charging £5 per print. is there a more reasonable price?

Good on you good for ingenuity I'm not able to help on the pricing though. Before you jump in selling door to door do you not need a licence from your local authority?

If your between 14 and 16 your still legally classed as a child and can only be employed subject to normal restrictions on school age children working hours etc. Local by-laws will limit the number of hours you work on Saturdays and during school holidays.

You did say your still at school and are thinking of selling/working on the door to door route so better check with the local authority where you live before trying out the cold calling.

With regards to the age... I do not reveal my age to clients and have no need to. The service I provide is just as good as anyone else on the Island and my age has never stopped me doing work. You don't have to reveal your age unless it is a safety problem.

Gav, I do indeed go to school but I spend all my free time on photograhy.

I think you have to disclose your age, employers are those persons that you work for they have to be told your under 16 to legally keep a register of all employees under 16 including dates of birth.

National by-laws require employers who want to employ young people of school age to register with the local education authority and apply for a work permit on behalf/for the young person or child, this legal obligation comes as standard under UK Employment Law.

Heads up for Mike V the hard pushed student angle defo the way to go and if you get a proper permit even better, walk before you run and good luck masterinfinity.

SITC, I act as a freelancer effectivly. They ask BWI to do do some photo, we go and take photos - We arn't employed by a single company not classed as staff.

im self employed sort of so i'll work a few hoursand sue myself if im working too much:lol:

I have checked our your Flickr... hold off on the selling for a bit :)

I really don't like the tone of your posts so far, and that isn't the sort of comment that's needed, and nor are most of your others in this thread. If I was a mod I'd be asking you to keep it nice and not to be quite so patronising.

And as for your comment about gear, it makes no difference what gear a person uses. I use a Nikon D40, a so-called entry level camera as you might like to think, but it doesn't stop me producing work that's been published.

Good post mate ;) Your camera is only as good as the user.
All the best and god luck mastertrinity.

Now then, are we sure cold calling is illegal? Doesn't stop scottish power etc etc calling at my door trying to get me to change suppliers.

Exactly, nor the callers from religious groups, nor the long-haired unwashed actionaid people, not to mention countless others.

The alternative master is getting them printed and putting them into a crad mount with backing (can't remember the proper name).

That way they would be ready to display either standing or hanging and make an item instantly available rather than them having to print and then mount. Plus you can get the mounts for about 80p each inclusing plastic sleeve to keep them dry/clean whilst you're canvasing

Slightly off topic.. Where do you get these from? :)

Umm its abit of an awkward one. As travellers are not allowed to ask if you want your drive tarmaced or garden work done in any circumstances. But like you said scottish power etc go around house to house trying to sell you their services. If you was to print off some leaflets etc though and put through doors that is not.And one question for darren. If you are 15 then who is the legal registered adult of your company.. You have to be 18 to register as self employed?

No...cold calling is not illegal. Master, you might require a peddlers license, although being 15 might be a problem. I would suggest checking with your local council/police station. Even in the No Cold Calling Zones that have been established around the country cold calling is permitted...dare I say the reception you receive might be a bit frosty!

Good luck and I hope whatever path you choose works out!:)

On the face of it that's one of the rudest and most patronising comments I've seen on here for a while. Would you care to elaborate?

He doesn't need one, you can register as self employed at any age, in theory anyway. If you're director of a Ltd Co you have to be at least 16 but that wouldn't appear to apply here.

i was taking some pictures of flowers and when they were on private property i was asking them for approval but one of them ask for my portfolio because they wanted to buy some images. how much to charge? its a 7x5 print that costs 50p to print. do i include a frame?
A
tenner without the frame, and use a decent lab - it may surprise you how much it will cost you to get 1 print, printed, sent to you, and for you to then post it on.. You may get close to £4.00 P&P - that is from the lab to you, and from you to the punter

1 off framing is a mare to price, avoid it, unless you have somone you use + the postage goes up a bundle

I doubt it. I'm still waiting for him to answer a loads of questions regarding his comments on wedding photography (despite him never having shot one).

considering he's 15 and he says he's proffessional he must have been doing it since he was 12. i think he want's to be proffessional so he is trying to grow up too quickly, he says he does these events but i bet hardly anyone hires him.

No one actually said you dont do avents.. We are meerly commenting on your rude comment to mastertrinity.

 I always enjoy a 'lively' debate!

Darren, you're a 15 year-old schoolboy who has a small number of events on display showing a very average standard of photography. For some reason you think that qualifies you to comment on the suitability of others to sell their images, to comment on areas of photography that you have zero experience of and generally act with woefully undeserved delusions of grandeur.

There are many people here who make a living doing this, and they/we don't feel the need to belittle others. You might want to wind your neck in a little.

I really don't know why people bother to reply to people that annoy them.

Just move on it only encourages them.

A lot of the events are weekend based so it doesn't interferr much. I go to school at 8 and return before 4. I have access to all my emails and voicemails throughout the day, so I am effectivly still working.

what was the name of tha curly haired laddy who was an antiques expert, then went a bit off the rails and had a sex change? *ponders*
