Yes
i was taking some pictures of flowers and when they were on private property i was asking them for approval but one of them ask for my portfolio because they wanted to buy some images. how much to charge? its a 7x5 print that costs 50p to print. do i include a frame?

Cold Calling? not sure thats allowed anymore is it? or is that just certain areas.

Anyway I would say £5 if its a 7x5 and its costing you very little to print.

£5

If I sell an electronic print, I charge a standard price of a tenner and I supply a file large enough to print a high quality A4 print - possibly a bit larger.

I think a fiver sounds fair for a small file/small print.

this is my chat up line "hello, im 15 and a photography student who is trying to make some money to buy some new camera equipment, would you like to see my portfolio" and we talk etc. i was thinking of selling 4 for £5 as i make £1.25 per print and i think it would be cheeky asking to help a student and me charging £5 per print. is there a more reasonable price?

Well I don't think you should be too daft about it. These pics represent your unique work which people can't get anywhere else, so don't sell for silly prices. A fiver might seem a lot to you at this stage, but it really isn't. ;)

trouble is my pics arent that good and so i cant charge much.

Good for you for selling them if you can. But cold calling is illigal i think. Im not 100% sure though. And like CT said this is your own unique work so show i off :).
Good luck mate.

In all honesty I am 15 years of age as well, however I have got off my ass and done something about it ... www.brightwightimages.com - I think knocking on peoples door is very unsuitable and is rather cheeky.

What sort of kit are you usiing? - Also could we see some of the images you are looking to sell?

istock isnt working for me, i am using a sony a300 and two lenses 18-70 and 55-200mm which are kit lenses, unfortunately i got rid of my images on flickr but i will try to get them back up.

The alternative master is getting them printed and putting them into a crad mount with backing (can't remember the proper name).

That way they would be ready to display either standing or hanging and make an item instantly available rather than them having to print and then mount. Plus you can get the mounts for about 80p each inclusing plastic sleeve to keep them dry/clean whilst you're canvasing

Ok I am goingto be honest here;

Sounds like you may be trying a little hard for your skill. It does sound like you have gone and bought a very entry level camera from Jessops and walked out thinking your a photographer - If iStock have not accepted you then that tells us the images arn't up to scratch.

I would recommend stopping going to peoples doors and asking them to buy prints - It won't really work in terms of reputation etc. Stick to photography as a hobby and then progress from there. I am lucky enough to have the kit and have the experience now however I started off like you - Taking photographs of flowers but I raised my skill level, got some contacts and started event photography with a 400D. I now use a 50D and 70-200 f2.8 L at the age of 15. It is possible buddy, but pace yourself.

I popped into the local pund shop for a few bits and found that they sel picture frames :O. i know they are not great quality but for £1 they make a picture.. ready for them to put straight on the wall or summut.. Just a thought.

You're approaching this with the wrong frame of mind if you don't mind me saying so- being apologetic about your stuff isn't a good start. ;) If it's good enough to offer for sale then it's good enough to charge a sensible price.

You're under- estimating the possible value of one of your unique shots which just fits the decor and that space on the wall that the customer wants to fill. - they might even like the shot just for what it is - more so than you may think.

Try setting up a a website if you're really serious about selling. Try approaching fine art type shops who you might be able to come to some supply arrangement with. You have the cojones to go cold calling and selling your prints, which is good- now you just need to grow a pair big enough to quote reasonable prices. ;)

istock havent said anything. i had taken pics of peoples flowers and they were "intriguided" (cant spell it lol) but they wanted me to show some of my photos to them as they might of wanted some. im not pushing myself either i have practiced for 4 months and so i know that im not an expert but its experience for me i also went to my local church to do some wedding photo's for experience:D i am really enthusiastic and if i could get a website i would and im going to local events every week and submitting to the local paper and one got me £10 (ok not much but dont take the p*ss:lol:).

I don't tend to submit to the local paper as they don't pay, however with regards to local events...

I got a website setup, got a kit decent enough to start some small-time event coverage and then dropped some emails to people. From there I have been building my experience and in November purchased a 50D - The winter has been quiet however the year is now looking up and only Wednesday did I purchase my first L series lens.

It is about having the business skills to carry it off, not only the kit.

Dont take this the wrong way. But u talk as if you have been doing this for years and you say your only 15. Also it says your in part ownership of your company, all this at 15 must be such an achivment... Dont you go to school?

As someone has pointed out it is now illegal to cold call in the UK.

I wish you luck in your endeavours

hey!, if youve only been going for 6 months and your allready confident enough to sell photos... jezz! good on you, ive been togging for a year as a proper hoby(doing lots), but way longer just as an on off thing, and have never thought about selling prints... all i would say is give it time, you sound very motivated, and like your trying to get yourself out there, which is great, if you keep this up, i have no doubt good things will start coming along:):D keep on going

With regards to the age... I do not reveal my age to clients and have no need to. The service I provide is just as good as anyone else on the Island and my age has never stopped me doing work. You don't have to reveal your age unless it is a safety problem.

Gav, I do indeed go to school but I spend all my free time on photograhy.

im not actually doing it as a job because i have two weeks off and need some cash so i'd thought of experimenting, if it doesn't work i'll just have to stick to online sales etc.

I don't believe that is the case. There are now certain areas that are designated as No Cold Calling and these are sign posted, but outside of these it is not a problem. Although personally I would prefer if it was completely illegal, but that is a whole other discussion.

Keep using that magic word. Student!

Most people hear it and they will let you in to areas because they think your not making profit. Where as if you were a pro a lot of people think your trying to make money and want a piece of it.

Also when people hear 'student' they feel sorry for you and know how hard it can be.

Good luck with it all!
