How many hits does your photography gallery website get per day?

By the way my counter stops at 5000 but at 18:27 my web stats registered 9837 hits that hour due to one photo by me and a story made up by the local news and I havent had more than 10 hits since I told the newsroom they made fict out of fact for a story

One day I'll work out why I get between 0 and 8 visitors a day...and it's more usually near the 0 end!

you are not paid in hits, you are paid in sales. Dont forget conversion

On CMS systems, try and find the place to edit the 'footer' of your site.

Thanks for that. I've got the code in there now, will have to wait 24hours for it to load recognise it now.

So no one beating my 3 million picture views per year then? :)

I have had around one and a half million pic hits in the first 5 months.it levels off over summer then back up again when footy starts... I am guessing you probably missed counting the accy stanley pictures that are hosted on my fotopic site but not directly linked to in the menu on the left.. you ahve to follow one of the latest shoots to it :)

Reckon you need to add a pay per view system and start turning those hits into beer tokens

I get a minute percentage of hits as pic sales.. and a minute precentage of 3 million is enough for this peasant :)

I get 3 million a month, files access. Half a million page views a month. So thats around 6 million page views a year.

Bit like me dino but I dont advertise mine yet it comes first in a google search lol

I get 20/30 a day. Sometimes 80, sometimes 0. Wish there was a day you could take family and friends out.

I used to get around 8-10 a day (mainly from here) then my site broke... Now I get one or two. I really need to get my site up and running again.

You have to be a bit careful how you interpret web site stats. They can be quite misleading. For example "hits" do not tell you anything. A hit is any file downloaded from your web site. So, if you have a lot of navigation buttons with mouseover effects, these are all classed as hits and a single page download could be classed as 20 or more hits.

It is much better to use pageviews or sessions (visits).

My web site is doing pretty well at the moment. This is a summary of the stats for May.

stats.jpg

It seems to be averaging more than 2000 visitors per day. I have more than 400 pages on the site, many of them with fairly useful information. I have it well optimised for the search engines. I also keep the site current and update it most weeks.

If anyone is interested in me posting some SEO tips I would be happy to do so.

I also have a theory about the number of visitors. I suspect that there are not 2000 people per day actually visiting the site. I am well listed in Google Image search and I suspect that when people search for a particular image and one or more of my images come up in the search, that is counted as a "visit" to the site. I may be wrong about this and if anyone can confirm this I would be interested.

You have to watch out for bots.. they visit multiple times a day..

Yes, I am not sure if they are included in the sessions/visitors figures, but I have just checked the number of "hits" from bots this month 31,700 out of the total of 894,000.

My 6 million is pictures loaded onto the screen and viewed, since every page on my site has my work on :p

[tongue in cheek]
Congrats to all the pros not earning a living from providing a free gallery service for millions of viewers

My main website gets between 50 and 70 a day on average, although it's flash based so not as easy to be found in searches.

My blog currently sits at a steady stream of roughly 200 a day although depending what new content I stick on it shoots up at times. When I put my 50mm AFS review on when that first came out I was getting roughly 1200 visitors a day for a week or so.

Some of the stats you guys are putting up are seriously impressive though - good work!!

Wow... This is interesting!
The only stats I know are my flickr...
My actual website probably averages at about 1 view per week

Only just got my Gallery sorted in the last 3 months.

Have only got the exploring stuff online at the moment but the site seems to be getting a good few hits :D

What difference does a lot or a little trafic make? You are not paid in web hits, you are paid in how many of those web hits turn into fee paying customers

If you want lots of trafic, you just need a adwords campaign with the word sex in it. Howeber, if your site is rubbish at converting customers, you will only end up very poor

To get lots of visitors:
1. get lots of relevant content that is search engine frinedly, and do broad spectrum SEO
2. analyse what works and what doesnt by looking at the stats and analytics
3. consider then a more targeted adwords campaign, taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of your organic SEO
4. Ignore the first 3-4 months of stats, they are polouted

To improve conversion:
- Use and understand tools like google anlytics site overlays. Use tools that track real visitors in real time - you need to understand what draws them in, and what makes them leave
- make considered, reasoned small changes, and then track the efacacy of the changes
- Set specific measurable goals, and concentrate on them
- Take a step back, look at the competition - Are your prices wrong, is your text poor, is your site not polished enough
- Do consumer surveys etc..

Post away please! :)

PurpleClouds asked me to post some search engine optimisation techniques. I think some of them have been posted elsewhere on the forums. Before you start you need to decide what keywords you want to optimise each page for. You cannot optimise for everything.

Search engine optimisation is a big topic and can get quite technical so I thought I would just point out some of the more important points:

• Get a domain name and point it to your web space (rather than a weird web address supplied with free web hosting).
• If possible have your important keywords in your domain name eg: www.wildlife-photography.co.uk.
• Make your page names reflect the content of the page eg: bluebells.htm is my bluebells page.
• On each page have a <title> tag that reflects the content of the page and includes important keywords. eg: <title>English Bluebell - Hyacinthoides non-scripta</title> . Note: This is not the title displayed on the page but on the top bar of your browser. It is VERY important.
• Add a meta description tag in the header. Eg: <meta name="description" content="English Bluebell - Hyacinthoides non-scripta - Wild flowers in an English Country Garden">. Keep it short and succinct.
• Add a meta keywords tag, but this is not so important and is not used by many search engines. Eg: <meta name="keywords" content="English Bluebell Hyacinthoides non-scripta Wild flowers Country Garden">.
• Use header tags on the page to identify important keywords. Eg: <h1>English Bluebell</h1>
• Always use alt tags on images describing the image. Eg: <img src="../a/i/flowers/bluebell.jpg" alt="English Bluebell - Hyacinthoides non-scripta">
• If possible put plenty of text on the page and include relevant keywords. Around 250 words is great.
• When linking from one page to another, add keywords to the link text. Eg: “A catalogue of English birds, animals, flowers, trees and fungus found in an English Country Garden”. birds would link to the birds page, flowers to the flowers page, etc.
• Make a site map which contains links to all the pages in your web site. Link to the site map from your home page if possible.
• Add a sitemap.xml file. This is a special file which contains information about all the pages on your web site and is specifically for Google. See http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ for more details.
• Get as many high quality links TO your site as possible. VERY IMPORTANT.

As others have said in this thread "Content is King". Providing useful content is vital. Also I completely agree with Richard above - you can get plenty of visitors to your site using Google Adwords. What you then need to do is convert vistors into sales. However, I think it is always worth optimising your site for the search engines so that you at least maximise the free traffic rather than just relying on Adwords.

I hope this is useful.
