i always thought the 50 1.8 is overrated. it's not a crap lens, but the autofocus lets it down. it's probably ok for portraits of adults and older kids or things which don't move all that fast, but when i had it, i had a young child running around and it couldn't keep up.
that said, i have some captured some precious memories with it and as said, optically, it's pretty decent.
although 50mm isn't my favourite focal length on fullframe, if i wasn't saving up for other lenses i want more, i'd definitely have one in my bag... but i prefer the fov from a 35mm lens more.
35mm vs 50mm is something of personal preference i think - there is a degree of crossover with those lenses depending on how you use them, you might find you like the fov from the 35 f/2 lens more (which is similar build quality and not much more expensive) than the 50 1.8
