How Good Is Canon's 50mm f1.8 Mk2

The optics are pretty good - wouldn't go so far as shouting from the rooftops about them - but not bad either

The build quality is utterly comical though - the optics might be ok but the lens feels like a complete turd to use.

+1!

What extension tubes would you recommend as I wouldn't mind trying that.

I use a set of Kenko DG AF tubes that I got s/h on here but Amazon sell a set of Polaroid DG AF tubes for £60 which get good reviews:

You can also get a set of non-auto tubes for about £10.00 of Ebay but you may be disappointed as they are not automatic which means your exposure control doesn't work.

i always thought the 50 1.8 is overrated. it's not a crap lens, but the autofocus lets it down. it's probably ok for portraits of adults and older kids or things which don't move all that fast, but when i had it, i had a young child running around and it couldn't keep up.

that said, i have some captured some precious memories with it and as said, optically, it's pretty decent.

although 50mm isn't my favourite focal length on fullframe, if i wasn't saving up for other lenses i want more, i'd definitely have one in my bag... but i prefer the fov from a 35mm lens more.

35mm vs 50mm is something of personal preference i think - there is a degree of crossover with those lenses depending on how you use them, you might find you like the fov from the 35 f/2 lens more (which is similar build quality and not much more expensive) than the 50 1.8
