I think some thought you could have just googled it if you really needed to know, but personally I see nothing wrong if you honestly do wan`t to know.


FTR eyeso or eye ess o dosn`t really matter to me i`ve used them both depends on how lazy I am feeling I guess :lol:
 
ISO as mentioned earlier in the thread is International Standards Organisation, and the standards governing "ISO" in photography is ISO 12232:2006.

Working in the engineering industry, we seem to pronounce them as eye-so, yet Bristish Standards (BS)as Be Ess, so who knows?!

I guess as long as who your talking too understands it doesn't matter.
 
I grew up with film measured in ASA. Suddenly I spooted one day ASA had become ISO. Still don't know when it changed or why.

And I think its nice that Matt asked here rather than ignore all his mates and ask Google, and anyway how would google know what we would all say.

I spell out the initials..............

I still think in ASA but call ISO "eye ess oh". Unless it's a Griffo or similar in which case it's an "Ee-so".

www is sometimes called w3 - how lazy is that? ;)

ISO, as reported earlier is short for ISOS the "name" the I.O.S. decided to use in order to make it the same in every country.

It's just something I've observed, I don't have a clue why or what the rules might be but, thinking about it, I've got a mate who should know being a Speech and Language Therapist :thumbs:
 
There are plenty of acronyms which are now in everyday use as a word - radar, sonar, laser and scuba are the main ones, but how many people spell out the letters ascii (askey) or refer to the computer language BASIC as basic rather than B A S I C (beginners all-purpose symbolic instruction code), COBOL (Common Business Orientated Language), or the car manufacturers FIAT (Fabricca Italiana Automobili Torino), Alfa(Anonima Lobarda Fabbrica Automobili) - the Romeo bit was added in 1918 when Nicola Romeo bought the company. NATO and NASA are other ones in daily usage. Many people believe AUDI is one, citing Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt, but its not - its the Latin translation of the founder's surname (August Horch) and means 'hark' as in ' to hear'.

If the letters make a pronounceable word, people will use it as a word.

Some people may get a bit het up about it, but if they're than anal they've probably got other issues that pills or counselling will help with.

I used to say
I, S, O as it is not a word as such. I am more famila with the term A,S,A which again isnt a word.

Recently though I have adopted the saying of
I SO (eye so)

I used to work with someone who got very upset with people say sequel instead of SQL. I've taken to calling it squirrel to upset them. My Squirrel, Postrgre Squirrel, PL/Squirrel, etc.

Oh, and I've no idea how I say ISO. I can't think of a time I've said it to anybody. In the studio we just say "11 at 100" to mean "f/11 at ISO 100"

Bingo. ISO is a word. If it were an abbreviation it would be I O S ("International Organization for Standardization").

Shame really, because it's quite unusual to encounter abbreviations which can either be spelt out or pronounced as acronyms with equal validity. I can't think of any at the moment. Can you?

(And on a side note, is WWW the most useless abbreviation ever? "World Wide Web" is 3 syllables; "WWW" is 9 syllables.)
 
I find it stupid that photographers pronounce ISO as I, S, O yet they pronounce EOS as ee-OS. Contradicting yourself aren't you?

Explain that!
