How do you pronounce ISO??

Who cares, it does the same thing whatever I call it!

I find it stupid that photographers pronounce ISO as I, S, O yet they pronounce EOS as ee-OS. Contradicting yourself aren't you?

Explain that!

Certainly if you want to be a smart arsed twit a resurrect a 2 year old thread for no real reason:

ISO by it's very nature is an internationally recognised acronym, the shorter ones of which (usually TLAs) are generally detailed letter by letter.

EOS, whilst an acronym as well, was deliberately chosen as Eos is the Greek goddess of the dawn and sister of Helios, thus tying the camera series to the magic of light.

A S A

or Eye Ess Oh

I never know whether to pronounce Nikon as N EYE KON or N I KON

Eye-so

I pronounce it the same way I do other ISO standards, e.g. ISO 27001 (IT Security standard) I would pronounce Eye-so 27001. And so do many of my peers. Doesn't mean it's correct though, I have a real bugbear with people who pronounce SQL as Sequel.

This.

Apart from the fact that it's now ISO27002 and it's an Information Security standard not an IT Security standard (the distinction is very important). ;)

Everyone I know who deals with standards says Eye-so.

Every IT professional I've ever met says sequel too :p

I say I so, but who really cares as long we all know what we mean, DIN is the standard by which the power output is measured in my car, as well as a great many other things.

There are plenty of acronyms which are now in everyday use as a word - radar, sonar, laser and scuba are the main ones, but how many people spell out the letters ascii (askey) or refer to the computer language BASIC as basic rather than B A S I C (beginners all-purpose symbolic instruction code), COBOL (Common Business Orientated Language), or the car manufacturers FIAT (Fabricca Italiana Automobili Torino), Alfa(Anonima Lobarda Fabbrica Automobili) - the Romeo bit was added in 1918 when Nicola Romeo bought the company. NATO and NASA are other ones in daily usage. Many people believe AUDI is one, citing Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt, but its not - its the Latin translation of the founder's surname (August Horch) and means 'hark' as in ' to hear'.

If the letters make a pronounceable word, people will use it as a word.

Some people may get a bit het up about it, but if they're than anal they've probably got other issues that pills or counselling will help with.

ASBO is a good example
