how did people cope before the internet?

i wrote lots of letters. being married to and coming from a military family it really was the only way. glad it isn't like that now.

I'm a bit older than you, nearly 60. I don't remember fax machines in everyday use before the 1980s

I have worked for BT since 1975 and didn't see fax machines until the early 80's

Might you have been referring to Telex machines, they were very popular for sending lots of written information

I cannot remember the last time I read a newspaper (fond memories of black fingers, and that smell of the newsprint).

I myself would not bother buying the newspaper, as it feels like reading old news. Only reason I get it is because the missus likes the TV Guide :)

The first fax machine was invented by Scottish mechanic and inventor Alexander Bain. In 1843, Alexander Bain received a British patent for “improvements in producing and regulating electric currents and improvements in timepieces and in electric printing and signal telegraphs”, in laymen's terms a fax machine.

ah so the mondeo in the posh frock, is not ideal!!! ;)

As has been pointed out, that's the X-Type! The XF is based on the S-Type IIRC but is far better looking!
The old Picasso was more practical but thirstier, far less comfortable, noisier etc - the lack of practicality is a very small price to pay...

I think that's more or less what I said? "I don't remember fax machines in everyday use before the 1980s." I recall Telex machines in the RHKP in the 70s.

What that link doesn't say is the telephone fax machine was first introduced in 1964 by Xerox.

Sure, but this wasn't remotely affordable or accessible to small businesses and individuals. That didn't happen until the 1980s. IIRC, personal computers - as we know them - started to appear in the shops at about the same time.

You appear to have confused me with someone who "gives a *&^%"

:shrug::lol:

My parents are 55 and barely know how to work a nokia 1100 each. They basically live in the 80/90s!

Before the internet, the OP would have had to stew on his question in impotent, silent rage.

They must be a bit more advanced than the rest of us then, because they know how to operate a time machine;)

You I presume are a 14 year old who knows everything about anything;)

I don't think that you've thought that comment through very well!

yep really...:lol::lol::thumbs:

It's just some of the inane questions we are asked ...."Should I have tomato soup or leek & potato soup" type of banality...

Correct!

You obviously do since it was you that thought (and pointed out wrongly) that the XF was based on a Mondeo.

Point already made.

I'm glad that I do not have the internet looking at all the problems it causes ...

Quite agree. Its hard for people around 40 or so to imagine things differently now..... Just remain amazed at some of the subjects started up in oof and similar bits on other fora!

Oh well, I suppose it won't be all that long before people wonder how we managed with such a crude, primitive, resource as the internet/www in the 'olden days' of the early C21st.

I can remember when you could fall off a bouncy castle and hundreds of thousands of people worldwide wouldn't know about it! :whistling:

yeah and if you went to meet dodgy geezers in bird hides, only your close mates would hear

Fishing, photography, read books, played guitar, listened to music, went out and met real people and had real conversations whilst socialising in the real world.

I suppose it's all relative to what people feel they need to know and if someone can help with first hand experience You'll find people from all walks of life and different experiences so your likely to get an answer or suggestions. Just like these examples.

Can I ask a question?
I am thinking of buying a goat to pull my miniature chariot down the M1.

Check the highway code and you will find that animals are not allowed on it :p
:D

It would need to be a mechanical goat.

well done. Hope you had a fun time trawling my previous posts!:lol:

Well I'm 37 and was one of the first in my area to get broadband after suffering dial up for a few year. I can easily remember life before the net. God, the evenings when you had no plans [remember those? having to plan a meet with someone a week in advance!] were boring.

We watched way too much tv, remember?
