How buying a 1D Mark IV could save me £1800 (or the 1DIV purchase thread)

Got sensor cleaning on my mkIII

Who said you didnt ?.
Its the same MP as the 1DSMKII 16.8MP.
So as I said a 1DSMKII with a new name.

That's like saying my compact camera has the same MP as my pro digital SLR... so it must be the same...

The sensor is a lot different... but I'm not going to waste my time arguing about this.

Another point - the 1DS MII was a FF, hence why it was 16.8.

The new MIV is not FF, it's 1.3X, hence why the MP aren't the same or more than the 1DS MIII.

MPs are not everything! In fact, they are usually just for marketing purposes...

You need to compare the sensors and new tech.

What happens, some people just want the latest gear thinking it will make them a better photographer. The same people argue that the PS3 has 5 trillion more poligons then the Xbox. When realy they aint got a clue what there talking about.
Point being just use what you have and dont try and justify spending money on new kit.
If you want it get it, but do you need it ?, and will you be a better photographer.

Not really - I like the latest gear because I like new gadgets to play with...

Or maybe it just offers new functionality which I didn't have on my previous camera? Everyone has their own reasons for wanting it, but I think you went a bit far when you said it was the same as the MII with a different name... just my opinion.

I understand that you want to defend your old tech and justify to yourself that yours is still as good at the latest, but don't ruin it for others that are interested in getting the newest...

Hilary... I shoot at non league football grounds with a mKIII on iso 3200 at f2.8 with a shutter of 250 ... a mkIV will allow me higher iso and thus much needed higher shutter speeds... Please explain how a mkIIs would be as good as a mkIV? It would be a massive step down fromn a MKIII let alone on a par with a MKIV

Not even IMHO :)

I am afraid in the above scenario (and worse conditions) better equipment will make for better pics... I cant help that.. its just the way it is :)

I agree with people about better equipment not making better photographers.. I also dont like equipment snobbery... But 100% honestly because of the situations I find myself in.. Better equipment does mean better pictures... Unfortunatly most people just read the last line and jump on my back :)

Your original reply didnt quote or name anyone and seemed to be aimed at everyone hence my replies... in my case higher MP and ISO will be a massive difference.. a 1ds(xx?) is IMHO not much good for fast action sport because of the low frame rate...

Before anyone mentions spray and pray...Getting the pic in one shot is also a myth when if comes to sport.. the difference between a players eyes open/shut for example is mega and no amount of practice will get two players jumping for a ball the exact moment spray goes in the air and eyes are open... So a good frame rate is good without a spray and pray approach...

I've just been on the phone with Jessops and a few other places, and the consensus seems to be that it's either at the end of this week or beginning of next for the first batch.

Jacob's is saying the 18th and Jessops the 21st... hmmm

My Missus it far to sharp to fall for that.. shame really I knew I should have gone for the dumb girl with the big gazzongas..

Calumet were still advising the 18th yesterday. Tum-te-tum.

By the way, I completely agree with Kipax's statements on the main benefits being better ISO performance and more pixels for croppability. Any serious sports tog worth their salt knows that those are the big benefits of the Mk IV.

I quite agree - better equipment doesn't make you a better photographer, but it does give you peace of mind - if the photograph is 'bad' you can only blame yourself, not shortcomings in your equipment...

Using special "man-logic", I have worked out that purchasing a new 1D Mark IV could save me £1800.

A 1DIV will cost approx £4500, which should drop after launch, but say I get one on launch day. It has 16mp versus my 1DIII's 10mp. The additional resolution will enable me to crop in tighter to my photos so I could get down to a cropped resolution of 10mp and have the same resolution as my 1DIII.

Therefore, I dont need to buy a 400 2.8 costing £6300, thus saving £1800. I can still use my 300 2.8 and get better "reach" which will be pretty much equivalent to using a 400 2.8 on a 1DIII. Most sports photographers use a 400 2.8 as their standard lens of choice, with a second body carrying a 70-200.

Of course, if the 1DIV drops in price after launch which is surely will, the saving becomes even larger.

Great news for us all!

I like that kind of Logic i like :D I want to see some test shots from sports before i pull the trigger on a MKIV though

Just to put this in perspective, the 6mp increase in the 1D1V is bigger than the 50% increase from the 40D to the 50D and that was a jaw dropper at the time - in fact I think it's Canon's biggest pixel increase in any model yet?

It has to be a very desirable tool for those who need the cropping ability, frame rate and increased FOV over the XXD Series.

i think it will be awesome :D and i can't wait to see some 'proper' shots with it.

It's just hard to believe that they can sell it for so low.... they must be importing it from North America or Hong Kong...

At Calumet it's going for 4499.00.... which seems to be the average price.

Well its easy enough to check before saying they "must" be doing this that and the other... I contacted them and they replied with

It is from Canon UK with full Canon UK warranty. We are an authorised dealer.

Confusion reigns in our major camera retailers. Park Cameras said they had some in, then they didn't, then they confirmed Tues/Wed next week with a price drop to £4299 inc a spare battery.

Calumet confirmed none arrived today, but again likely Tues/Wed next week. They are at 4299 without a free spare battery.

I ahve today been told by the shop I was monitoring that ..well here it is..

Canon's policy on this is that they are only fulfilling confirmed customer orders, they won't provide us early units for stock... It is therefore essential that you place an actual order if you want one in a reasonable time.

so cant wait until there in stock.. gotta order hmmm looks like stock date will be even longer?

I'm on pre-order at two places, both of whom said they were expecting them on Wednesday (23rd) but one said they thought it may be delayed based on "what they'd heard".

So come on guys I showed you mine earlier in thread.. proper shop can go and try... 3,800 quid with UK warranty as canon dealers...

What price and where are you guys ordering from?

Well, I got one guy at Jacob's holding one for me as soon as they get them.

And it's for 4499.00.... but he's giving me a 32gb sandisc (60mb/sec), extra battery, cleaning kit, lowepro fastpack 350, and maybe something else :p

3,800 quid sounds very good... but it sounds like it's too good to be true...

Calumet and Park Cameras for me. The price seems to be fluctuating depending on who you speak to. I think it's £4299 with a 580EXII included but cant be sure. Will have to wait and see when the actual thing arrives in the shops.

Anyone heard anything yet? All seems quiet out there.

having already had the available date put back from dec 16th to jan 10th its a bit of a worry as to when in... Gonna be sick if someone gets one weeks before me ...........

Well, if it's not in by tomorrow morning, I won't get it till the new year :(

I got a flight to Poland tomorrow... and I kinda wanted it before that! Bah

plenty of D3's on the go guys :D :exit:

Just kidding, really looking forward to seeing how you get on with the MkIV

Big Canon delivery expected into Park Cameras tomorrow (30th Dec) apparently....

OK - just had the call from Park Cameras. They are saying that Canon have confirmed delivery for January 9th. They are apparently delivering across Europe on the same day.

Oh my beating heart... Cheers for that.. Hopefully my store (as in gonna buy from.. i dont own a stor) as canon dealer will get them:)

I am going to HK in a couple of weeks for my wedding, it priced just under £3k... I am tempted!

You wouldnt deal with the company if anything goes wrong... Direct with elstree... dealing with company just slows it down as all they do is deal with elstree for you... better quoting CPS number and going direct.... IMHO :)

Spoke to creative video today and they dont have a date... all europe is waiting and no one has a set date.... pathetic isn't it :(

OK, having seen Brad Mangin's shots, and comparing high ISO shots with the mkIII and mkII (which I own) I'm getting more and more enthusiastic about getting a mkIV...however, I simply cannot deal with the "when's it being delivered" saga of Canon release dates! I'm going to try and get one through my employer in time for the 6 Nations in Feb.

We shall see how it works out.

Though this may all be completely scuppered if the IOC and DataCo decide that they wont allow a camera with video!
