How about a thread for people recovering from GAS?

Hello. My name is Nod and I'm recovering from GAS.

My last lapse was last week and I am hoping that I can resist further attacks for some time. However, my recent lapse might mean that I need (yet) a(nother) new bag since the old one for that system is too small to hold it now.

Hi, my name is Chris and I've suffered from GAS all my life. I think it started when I started learning to read and write. We boys were encouraged to learn how to sharpen our pencils with a pocket knife, to learn how to put a sharp edge on our knives, and how to use them without cutting ourselves. I think I now have at least a dozen pocket knives and multi-tools.

The same goes for pens. When I started having to write essays I formed the unshakeable conviction that if I had a better pen I'd write better essays. I now have several rather good pens. Luckily I discovered that the best pens are not the most expensive. I now have several good pens. They didn't improve the quality of my essays. I now write with keyboards.

Don't get me started on photography!

Sorry to buck the trend, but I think i've found a happy place after a couple of years upgrading and adding kit.
Does that mean I am kinda recovering from GAS. I'm sure it will kick in again though, when i have to switch to Nikon or Sony for sensor reasons

I thought i had finally cracked it recently but then a 5D mk iii called on me in the classifieds and the divorce is back on the cards.

I'm doing pretty well at the moment. When a GAS attack comes along, I give it an extra days thought.

So far it's working ....

So you think about it on Tuesday contemplate it on Wednesday and buy it on Thursday. That's not much of a plan to be honest. [emoji23]

I have a set of rules and required steps to keep things in check. This is for cameras mainly but is flexible.

1. Never buy on impulse - this doesn't always work but if the price is high enough it generally kicks in.
2. Read even more reviews until you are thoroughly confused - this can slow you down considerably especially if the shops shut while you're doing it. Of course the internet is the devil here.
3. Look at the latest release by another brand, this is very effective.
4. Start debating (again) whether you should go full frame or crop as appropriate.
5.Convince yourself that the camera you want is just about to be updated.

I haven't bought anything for a year, except a new lens but I needed that.

I am thinking of offering a service to help people avoide GAS. It involves sending me all the money you have left after buying food. This will be invested in some nice cameras. They will be photographed and you will be able to look at the photos every day. In Hi res for a small extra fee.

Very thoughful of you!

Recovering? How?!!

Steve.

In the same way as alcoholics are never truly cured.

In my defence, my recent purchase is something I've been waiting to appear for over a year so not an impulse buy.

FWIW, I reckon every hobby attracts GAS. I also play golf (mainly for the exercise and fresh air) and have recently invested in a 2nd hand electric trolley. This won't improve my golf (it's a piece of kit, not a miracle worker!!!) but it does leave me aching far less than the pull trolley or carry bag.

I think an electric trolley is worth two shots a round!

My dog has a gas problem or is that something totally different?

I find it quite easy to cure body GAS. Just work out what it'll be worth in a year or two, it's horrific to see how much value they lose. Divide that by the number of keepers that only the new body allowed you to take. Camera bodies are the new film.

Also, folks seem to mainly use one of three reasons to upgrade.

- low light photography. But when was the last time you actually saw a good low light photo? Once golden hour has gone you get better shots with a flash. Its nothing to do with sensitivity, its the quality of the light. Isn't 'low light photography' an oxymoron anyway?
- 'upgrading to full frame'. The only person upgrading here is your orthopedist and your bank manager.
- impending special event (holiday, new baby, shooting a mates wedding) - this one is my favourite. Exactly when you shouldn't be learning a new camera... you buy a new camera. Gets exponentially dumber the closer it is to the big day and if it's a preorder of a new nikon (aka quality control defect roulette)

My GAS has been under control since I had my 7D2 to go with my 5D3... But I am going to the Photoshow on Monday so I suspect. Relapse is imminent. I am wondering whether to start a Fuji system in anticipation of not wanting to lug heavy gear about some time down the road. Of course, by then, it would be old anyway but... Hey ho! And it is very spooky that someone else on here has a pen and a penknife collection. That is also under control..... And they don't sell them at the Photoshow!

I've got GAS going on now in my life for yonks it seems, my personal shrink can't find a fix;

Motorcycle GAS/Photography GAS/Wood-burning-stove GAS/addiction to wood for the log burners GAS/Building sheds to store wood GAS.

I'm actually very messed up with it. No cure.

I'm in rehab. No more gear for 6month. If I manage that. Go another 6months

Dont be so boring. Past 2 weeks got myself a 50g, d700, a6000, xt1, xe1 and now I need some fuji lenses. :woot::wacky:

I saw this thread and thought I was doing quite well on the impulse buy front however after thinking about it, it occurred to me that I have purchased a hell of a lot since the new year started. 4 bodies, a flash, 7 lenses, 2 grips, 2 straps, 3 cases, 3 filters and a truck load of small accessories. It has however allowed me to play with a few different brands so I at least now know exactly what it is I want so can move some of this kit out and replace it with the brands I want/need (definitely the latter lol).

Lets see how the photography show this weekend at the NEC plays with me. Lets see if I can resist! :D

I have found the cure for G.A.S - if anyone kindly buys me the remaining three lenses on my wish list I will reveal all...

This could have been written for me.
1 and 3. In the summer I was going to take photographs for my daughters wedding abroad. I was leaning toward FF for "low light" but sensible purchased a flash which worked out to be a great move rather than move to FF...
2. After the wedding I decided I would sell all my MFT and move to FF. I finally made the move to FF just over a week ago for "improved low light and bokeh! I have this week returned the FF camera as I was not happy with it.

So now I need to decide do I go back to MFT? Or...
Oh, Fuji looks nice :)
GAS indeed is incurable

Ive got GAS, a Nikon D3S, Nikon 400mm f/2.8 VRII, Nikon TC-14E II, Nikon TC-17E II, Reged Tripod, 2 Monopods, Nikon EN-EL4A, Nikon EN-EL15, Battery grip for my D750 in the last 2 weeks and a Nikon D4 today
