Help with lens choice.

Hello everyone, I plan on purchasing a new lens for wildlife, birds mainly but other larger subjects too.
I'm a Nikon user and my current biggest lens is the 70-300VR and as you can imagine that's not quite long enough for most shots.
Now I have trawled the Internet to gather the usual info regarding my potential purchase but as it will be a large sum of money I want to make the right choice .
The two lenses I have been deciding over are the 400mm f2.8VR or the 600mm f4 VR.
I forgot to mention that I'm currently on a DX format D3300.

Did you consider renting to try one or more out and see how you on before buying?

Have you considered any of the current 'hyperzooms' such as the Sigma and Tamron 150-600's or the new Nikon 200-500?
