Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong section but I couldn't see one that was more appropriate :)

When I plug my D50 into my computer via the USB cable, I get an error message which says "USB device not recognized. Your USB device has malfunctioned..."

It happens on both my computers (Windows Vista and XP) so I think it must be a camera problem rather than a computer problem. It also happens on both Mass Storage mode and PTP mode. Apart from this my camera works fine and I can upload my photos using a card reader, but I'd like to try some tethered shooting but unfortunately this problem stops me from doing so.

Does anyone have any idea why this problem occurs and if there's anything I can do to fix it? I've searched a number of forums and google to no avail, the Nikon website doesn't yield any answers either so it doesn't seem like a common problem :'(

Thanks and apologies if I haven't provided enough info.

Have you loaded the camera software onto your computer? It is sometimes the case that only by doing this will the appropriate drivers which will then recognise your camera be loaded.

No I haven't done that, I'd better go root around for the CD then! :D

installed the software but still the problem persists, anyone got any ideas?

Yes, its likely to be the card, the pc sees the card not the camera, you don't need software of any kind.
Either change the card or like FITP say's, try it in a card reader, at least you can eliminate camera or card malfunction.

make sure it is connected via mass storage and not PTP(pictubridge). then change card and repeat procedure, maybe.

You've restarted the computer since installing the software?
