HELP! PlayStation 3... should i? *edit*... getting expensive!

yeah I have the same spec as you but with an 8800gtx, but I'm sure then that you can testify what a great card the 4850 is for the money...

I bought an 80GB version bundled with a HDMI cable and FIFA 09 from Amazon a couple of weeks ago and have since added COD4, GTA4 & F1 2006 as well as downloading Wipeout HD and some old classics like Sprint 2000, MediEvil & Prince of Persia etc.

Impressed with blu-ray and DVD upscaling capabilities. No experience of online gaming yet but looking forward to giving it a go :)

I'm such an old f*rt... I really need to start taking advantage of the online network... I might even find someone even worse than me :lol:

I loved Wipeout on the PSone and think this is every bit as addictive for speed freaks with lovely crisp graphics (1080p) Have you had a look at the Playstation store yet? I'm sure there's a free demo you can download in there :thumbs:
 
I have a fast PC more than capable of handling the latest games, a PS3 and an Xbox 360.
I bought my Xbox 360 in Sept 06 and in April 07 it went back to the shop due to the 3 red rings of death and they replaced it.
The replacement then died in Jan 08 (out of the 1 year warranty but still withing the MS 3 yr warranty for 3 red lights of death) so if it went for repair.

My prefered choice for gaming is still the Xbox 360.
Better game content, too many multiplatform games still aren't as good on the PS3 imo.
I prefer to game on my 32" Samsung LCD than on the PC monitor.
The Xbox 360 controller feels far more comfortable than any gamepad I have ever used.
The PS3 controller is too small and very out of date (imo) and the the DS3 controllers only real benefit is force feedback (also removes the deadspots with the earlier PS3 controllers).
PC versions of games still seem to have patches released ready for when the game goes on sale!
Xbox live is a fantastic community for online gaming compared to the PC and PS3.
Don't get me wrong, I still play exclusive titles on the PS3 and a few on the PC but if I had only the choice of one, it would be the Xbox 360 even though they've had issues with the design.
 
Stuntmonkey - glad you're loving the PS3. If you want to use it to stream stuff from your pc then I can recommend a great piece of free software, TVersity

Works an absolute treat with my PS3 and streamed HD material looks wonderful.

either way the 4850 will last you a while.

it's clear that the PC is much better, and that is an old graphics engine its using for the PC, its the same engine as COD4, so it'll run well over 70FPS on a 4850 at full settings.

on games on the PC there is games with much better graphics than COD5 though, and the screen shot of COD5 for PS3 above is pretty much the maximum graphically that the PS3 is capable of.

That for me is exactly the point. I do not want to be opening up my PC and changing graphics card etc just so i can play the latest version of some game. I also dont want to sit in front of my monitor making sure im not being set upon by viruses, or making sure I have the latest direct x version etc etc etc. What i want is to stick a disc in my machine and know that it will just work, and to play it on my big hd telly with its cinema sound system, not hunched over the keyboard in my sons bedroom.

I am not disputing that graphically you can beat the PS3, well done, what im saying is, i want to play games not manage a system so i can now and then run cod 5 with better looking trees.

And the word from several developers is that the PS3 is currently using about 40% of its potential, so its not at its limit yet.

You knock yourself out, pouring over pc mags for the latest greatest card to fit, me? i will just keep playing the excellent games i have on my console.

no the point i was making was that you don't need to upgrade your grphics card at all.

also there is nothing stopping you plugging a PC into your TV.

I'm not saying PC is better than PS3 for everything, but all the reasons you state above are simply false or invalid.
 
i dont want to lug my pc down to my telly, its too many wires as it is.

and im not sure the onboard intel graphics chip will really do COD 5 justice, im guessing a rate of .5fps wouldnt help me get that sniper in the trees.

we're talking about BUYING a new PS3 or building a new PC for the same price, you would get a much better graphics chip if your spending the same price as the PS3 on a computer, so you could keep your PC where it is.

It shouldn't need any more wires than a PS3, video + audio (seperate or one HDMI) and power cable.

well said stuntmonkey, in answer to your original question, take a quick look at the games available, and the ones coming up, of which there are some stunners, and get one, they are brilliant. Unless you are a bit anal about framerates etc, you wont notice any problems with the graphics on your ps3, far from it.

It's simple to set up and there are also guides out there. The official PS Forum is very helpful as is the forum attached to TVersity. I used to stream using wireless and it was a bit choppy at times and would lose the signal. Since hard-wiring it to my router there hasn't been 1 problem.

As for recommending games, if you like racing games the GT5:Prologue is cool. And of course the PES range of games too.

So as you know i now have myself a PS3. After a week or so of gameplay i couldnt help but wonder what i was missing out on by playing through a crt tv

out came the credit card again and i got myseld a 32" SONY BRAVIA :nuts:

I would not buy anything until after Christmas if possible.

If the recession is as bad as we think then it'll be a very poor season for shops and they'll be off loading stock at crazy prices after Christmas.

I've had my 60GB PS3 since, near enough, launch and its been great to me. Sure it doesn't get played as much as my 360 but for media streaming and BD films, its brilliant.

Oh and I can fully recommend Uncharted for the PS3 StuntMonkey, especially if you like Tomb Raider-esque games. Should be around £20 in the Classics range too.
