HELP! PlayStation 3... should i? *edit*... getting expensive!

We feed our consoles through an HD projector onto an 8 foot screen... now that's immersive gameplay! :woot:

The Flashman clan seem to use the 360 far more than the PS3 for games... but the PS3 is as good a Blu-Ray player as any casual user is likely to want. We bought a seperate Sony Blu-Ray player (BDPS500) for another room a couple of months ago and you'd have to be pretty anal to spot any difference in picture quality or usability between that and the PS3. I guess that makes the PS3 exceptional value for money, a Blu-Ray player with a top games console built in. If you don't watch movies I still think the 360 has the edge on games though. Tough choice!

What, like the ability to play Blu ray discs superbly, to upscale DVD's to "near blu ray quality", to update it's firmware regularly to give you even more functions and useability?
Sounds too good to be true
;)

yeah a PC can easily do that...

We've got PCs sprinkled around the house for gaming/general use & my son has a Xbox360 for even more gaming :). When I convince MrsG that we need a 42inch HD TV then I'll get a Sony BluRay player (PS3 ;))

almost forgot the PS2/Gamecube/Wii/DS/Gameboy :D

Was gonna get my lads a xbox 360 for crimbo.. they have ps2, psp, ds and Wii .... But i heard xbox 360 not exactly stable and there always on pro evo so best go for ps3 i am guessing?

Off to google "blue ray" ... never heard of it before.. sounds like everyone likes it... just no idea what it is.

:D

What is the cheapest that i could build a pc to play Bluray disks?

Slap a blueray reader into any mid-range PC for £70 (£120 if you want to be able to write as well)

And that would upscale DVD's too?

what about HDPC or whatever its called, BD media wont play unless the video card is compliant?

yes it will. HDMI card you'll need if you don't have seperate audio or your tv doesnt have an audio jack. but most modern cards have hdmi

got a link to a suitable card?

hmm so £150 for a drive, £50 for a card, £50 for a HDD, £130+ for a Mobo bundle..its not really cheaper, ive not looked at cases, i gave up. I suppose if you like building PC its ok, but tbh i can stream to the ps3 from my mac or other PC, so its kind of sorted already.

you don't need 150 for a drive, 60 will do. after all the PS3 can't write BD.

you don't need anywhere near 130 for a mobo, cases can be had for 30.

spec me a system and i will look at it, if im gonna get a drive, it will be a writer, i could use 50gb backups!

what do you want it for? if you just want the nearest thing to a PS3 for gaming you don't need a BD player to play games at 1080p.

and that will have much much better graphics than a PS3

you got a 80gb hdd there too, and you can add another £20 if you wanna BD writer.

you could actually get away with a much worse GPU aswell, you could get a 8800 GTX for £60 which will still beat a PS3

its been a while since ive had any dallying with pc graphics cards, can you point me at some screenshots of the type of graphics that will be turned out by the newer cards?

sure, these were both with the 4850 (what is in that spec)

just go on gamespot > pc section.

find a gmae you like the look of and the 4850 will play every modern game at full settings, except for crysis which it'll play at high setting just not quite full, still looks amazing though.

im starting to wish i had never asked

it would be nice to see some comparison shots for the same scene, the ps3 isnt too shabby, given that its running an older Nvidia GPU, and for the difference in price, im not sure that its a big advantage

http://static.gamesradar.com/images...-06-12/PCG176.pre_crysis.gen3--screenshot.jpg
bit of jpeg comression on this but its not far from PC at similar cost, certainly not so much as to be must-have on PC

are you saying that that screen shot is on PS3? if so its not its crysis which is only on PC.

and if you think that any game on PS3 has as good as graphics as Crysis on PC then you can't be too bothered about graphics, or know much about them.

your right its not. Googled for it, its not out till next year.

http://static.gamesradar.com/images...11-04B/GAM206.rev_resist.1_01--screenshot.jpg

that is from Resistance 2, out shortly

http://static.gamesradar.com/images...-04B/GAM206.rev_resist.best02--screenshot.jpg

not bad really...for a console...

graphics are good enough, and the streaming, and the bluetooth remotes, so i can sit on the couch..

the screeny you show of crysis, is that on the graphics card you linked to, or a higher spec one?

the screeny of crysis is with the card i linked and thats running at 60fps, not 30 like a PS3.

also that shot you showed isn't a screen shot, its more than 1900x1200 (res of a PS3) so it must be some kind of art work or something to do with the game, not a gameplay screen shot, might be from a cut scene. besides it is commonly excepted that PC has much better graphics than PS3, its just PS3 used to be the cheaper option, but with hardware so cheap now, its not anymore if you build yourself.

also im not saying PS3 graphics are bad, but compared to a PC they are tbh, i was really disapointed when I went on my mates PS3 on his 42" 1080p TV, looked nothing compared to what i can get on my computer.

Personally I couldn't give a hoot if the graphics on one system are a bit better than another. The only big USP PC's have over consoles for me is that you can use a mouse on FPS's... I always get totally owned when I have to aim with a gamepad :'( . I still can't be bothered with the hassle of setting a PC up just for games though... I'll just have to learn to shoot straighter!

horses for courses i suppose. The ps3 does do 60fps on some games..

i will see if i can find some actual screenies from actual games or something later..

also the PS3 doesn't even do full 1080p on a lot of games, just 720p.

I would advise you not to get into a screenshot war though because your going to lose if its PS3 vs. PC

next year ps3 games will run on my ps3, im betting a lot of the cutting edge pc games wouldnt run on my pc, unless i keep updating it.

seems to be a lot of willy waggling on here from people, but at the end of the day pc's xboxes and ps3s are all good at what they do, it basically comes down to what games you want to play and what system they are on.

personally, ive got a 60gb PS3 and love it to bits, plus i like knowing its likely to actually work when i turn it on, and do enjoy free online gaming.

still, horses for courses and all that.

thats not the point, you can change quality settings on a pc, if it can do better than a PS3 now, it will always do better than a PS3, because games of the future turned down a bit will still look as good if not better than current games on PC which are better than PS3.

either way the 4850 will last you a while.

here is a screeny from COD5 on PS3:

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2008/233/944198_20080821_screen005.jpg

here is roughly the same part on PC:

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2008/191/944197_20080710_screen001.jpg

it's clear that the PC is much better, and that is an old graphics engine its using for the PC, its the same engine as COD4, so it'll run well over 70FPS on a 4850 at full settings.

on games on the PC there is games with much better graphics than COD5 though, and the screen shot of COD5 for PS3 above is pretty much the maximum graphically that the PS3 is capable of.

can i just say that this thread has gone completely off subject from my op!
i was looking on peoples oppinions on the ps3, not looking for a war between whats better between ps3 and pc! i dont give a crap about gaming on pc, its not what im looking for. i have 3 laptops, a pc and a mac already!
everyone is welcome to theyre own oppinion... doesnt mean its right

ANYWAY...

back on track.

The ps3 has arrived and i finally found my network key to get it online

all i can say is thats its a cracking bit of kit and i have sore thumbs :p

next step is getting my head around this online gaming lark.

quick question though. does anyone know how long i should charge the remote for?

charge the remote until its charged...i left mine plugged in to my laptop for a while when the ps3 was off, you can view the charge on-screen..

on games on the PC there is games with much better graphics than COD5 though, and the screen shot of COD5 for PS3 above is pretty much the maximum graphically that the PS3 is capable of.

thats not the best the PS3 can do at all, the shots from R2 were better, and also, when were those screenies taken, August? A couple of months polishing improves games no end.

Granted PCs with uptodate graphics cards will look better, but graphic quality is going to be on a sliding scale according to price, as will bits and bobs in the pc?

I would advise you not to get into a screenshot war though because your going to lose if its PS3 vs. PC

i wasnt, i was defending the position, PS3 graphics are not shabby, lazy coding by developers has hampered them thus far, except first party titles, such as resistance. Dont forget the ps3 is only running an old Nvidia chip, its not cutting edge interms of GPU

Stuntmonkey, sorry for taking it off-topic, if he pushes his luck too far then i will just ban him..

No worries Matty

Isnt it funny how some people confuse their own opinion with fact

I'm not saying PS3 graphics are shabby, until you consider the fact you can get a PC with which can do much better for the same price, plus PC games are much cheaper.

Also the 4850, the card I specced you, will play all the latest games at full.

I have an 8800GTX, which was the bee's knees when i got it, (couple of years ago) but I can still play all the latest games at full settings, and the 4850 is much better than my card. Computer hardware atm is miles ahead of the games.

we missed the price of windoze off the checklist for prices..

we missed the price of windoze off the checklist for prices..

xp pro is £30

or vista home premium is £60

then you could take off about £40 of the graphics card anyway and still have much better graphics than a PS3, an 8800GTX can be had for 50-60 pound now.

you've also got to remember that when you come to upgrade when new consoles come out, that you can reuse almost all of it, psu, drives, case, etc,

thats very true, i think i still have disk drives from 4 years ago!

If people want to debate PC vs Console why don't they pop across to OcUK & I'll come and watch :D

well yeah, im not saying that pc's are catorgorily (cant spell sorry) better, just I think there often better value, you get more, and they have better longevity.

I've never bought a PC, always build them.

My current box is an overclocked Q6600/ 4Gb / 4850 Gfx, watercooled.

The only bits that have stayed the same over the last few increments are floppy/mouse/keyboard/case/watercooling, everything else has moved down the MrGubby Pc chain :D
