Right guys, not to go into detail but i have had a crappy weekend and week full of bad news and and i need something to take my mind off it.
As silly as it sounds it cant be photography related as that will put my mind back on it(and i have £450 worth of flashes i have no idea how to use already!) :bang:

Basically i was thinking of treating myself to a PS3.
is it any good?
i must admit i like the idea of blueray.

does it have an inbuilt modem? wireless?

what games do people suggest for someone who enjoys shooting stuff and driving stuff?

any help or suggestions are much appreciated

i had one for a few weeks but i took it back because i needed the money to pay a massive council tax bill.
but i did like it (especially using HD)
I would suggest investing in a second controller and you need to buy the HD cable seperately.

it doesnt have a modem, but does have wi-fi built in.
driving stuff = gran turismo prologue

Playstation 3 is superb, great for blue ray, the wireless side of things works really well. nIf you like shooting games get call of duty 4 ( although the new one is out in less than 2 wekks) the online play is superb. from a big 40 yr old kid lol !!

Thanks for the inout guys. looks like im going to have to buy one. not concerned with waiting for the price to come down as i want one NOW

like the look of Gran Turismo and Call of duty. Also GTA looks good.

so... anyone know where the best deals are at the moment?

My son plays on Call of Duty all the time, I would highly recommend it, also Driver 3 is a good game, you drive all over at stupid speeds, shoot people, keep you quiet for ages

I know it's obvious but have you tried Game, Game Station, Toys R Us etc... they should be doing pretty good deals coming up to christmas.

call of duty does look good but think i will wait for the new one to come out on the 14th. i think the best deal about is on Amazon atm. i can get the 80gb PS3 and GTA4 for £299.97.

dont think thats too bad

anyone else before i press 'place your order'?

Had two, returned two, they just kept dieing.

Lurch, thhere were a bad batch sent out, my boss had trouble. I bought one last weekend, only had about 5 hours on it so far coz of work and whatnot. I am amazed already. Loving splinter cell double agent, even though it makes me want to punch the telly, far cry 2, GTA 5, graphics are amazing, i find myself just looking around at the scenery, its so nice!!!

Just do it. the only downside iv noticed, it is a massive dust magnet, so keep a cloth handy ;)

Well ive just done it

hadnt abused the credit card for the while so i gave it a light spanking :bonk:

opted for the PS3 80gb, GTA4 and Gran Turismo 5

Hopefully here Tuesday

You'll love it. GTA 4 is hugely addictive, I was actually kinda sad when I completed it last week, as silly as that sounds.

i cant wait for it to arrive already!

unfortunately Amazon keep telling me that my credit card wont go through, even though there is nothing on it and all the details are exactly correct :bang:

Devil May Cry 4 is a really top game aswell!!!

Do i feel a Playstation 3 thread coming on :p

If you can find a 40GB PS3 and is cheaper than 80GB then buy that as you can put a new HD in yourself which is very easy, mine has 320GB which is plenty.

40 and even 80gb really are not going to be enough for what the PS3 can do - downloading games such as Wipeout, then there is video and your music and if you were to get play TV.

Putting a new HD in is really easy and does not affect the warranty, Instructions: http://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/PS3-02_03-1.9_1.pdf

Thanks Biko

wish i had known that before i purchased :p

No point, you could get a Computer upgrade which would give you better graphics than a PS3 for cheaper.

yantorsen. i would like to see the spec of that computer???!!!

two of my best mates are computer engineers and both have ps3's.

im sorry but you really cant beat a dedicated games machine for the money :cuckoo:

yes you can, anything core 2 duo, 2gb ram, 3850pro or higher will kick a PS3s arse in terms of graphics, of course some games are only available on PS3 (and some only on PC) and PS3 are good if you have mates over.

Other than that PCs are better in every way.

Should have got an xbox 360 IMO they are way better, never liked the PS range.:coat:

nah. ps3 does what it says on the time, tis good enough now.

Im a PS fanboi, and the 360 sucks. :D

Always useful to have a mod onside :bonk:

well i ordered the ps3 and 2 games from Amazon. Just checked my email and the PS3 should be here tomorrow via shiity link... they have however posted the games and they're not expected till wednesday!!! wtf?! :gag:

looks like i will be down blockbuster tomorrow nite :bang:

anyways it has been a while since i had a consol so be expecting lots of stupid questions

I vowed that I wasn't going to buy a PS3 but when I was looking for a Blu-ray player and asked for advice on what to buy on the A/V forums, the PS3 kept being recommended. So I went and bought one.
The first one lasted about a month and then went pear shaped. Locked up after a firmware download. Contacted Sony UK and they had a brand new one shipped out two days later, picked up the old one and away I went again.
I had the same problem with the replacement after about 3 weeks, again on the phone to Sony, again swapped two days later.
The third one has been spot on for the best part of a year now and I'm well chuffed with it. Couldn't have asked for more from Sony aftersales...

As a Blu-ray player it is superb. Standard DVD's look great too. As a games machine??? I tend to use the 360 for games as I much prefer the online experience and the controller on the 360 just sits in the hand a little easier. The PS3 controller feels very lightweight in comparison and isn't as intuitive to use.
I bought a few games for the PS3 when it first came out, but always buy the 360 versions now. I just wish they would bring out the F1 series for the X-Box but it's Sony only :nono::nono:

I love both consoles, but for different reasons.
Wouldn't be without either of them but if I had to dump one the 360 would go as I am more into films than games.
If you are going to use the PS3 for Blu-ray (and who wouldn't) then my advice is to buy the Sony remote, don't rely on the controller to operate the player. You've only got to breathe on the joystick and your films will be fast forwarding/rewinding before you can say "Jack Robinson"

get the dualshock 3 controller, much more weighty in the hand.

F1 coming to an overheating Xbox360 near you soon...

Agree 100%. Xbox Live works so much better than the PSN IMHO. I always buy multiformat games on the 360.

The PS3 has some good exclusives as well though. If you like shooters then Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is superb. It's a kinda cross between Indiana Jones and Tomb Raider. It's on budget release as well now so 20 quid new. It's one of my favourite games of the last few years. Ratchet And Clank is great if you like platformers - again 20 quid budget label. From the Playstation store you can download Super Stardust for a fiver or so. It's insanely addictive.

It's being released on the 360? Can't find reference to it anywhere...

I'd love it if it is....

Sorry for slight hi-jack
;)

so does a PC, what is your point? PC is better graphics, period.

As its my forum, i dont have to have a point . Dont be so confrontational, sunbeam, or you will be looking for somewhere else to poke waspnests. ;)

PC's might have better graphics, but I might not want to sit infront of a PC to play games, I want to sit infront of my 42" plasma and play games with Full Surround Sound, not some mickey-mouse Bose system...

Sony wouldnt cough up the money to Bernie for exclusivity, so multiplatform from next season.

Anybody tried LittleBigPlanet yet?

had one, it was fun at the start but it got played less and less. sold it for a Wii plus cash, now the Wiid oes the same lol. the PS3 is good if it will e used alot

There's nothing stopping you plugging a PC into your 42" plasma and surround sound system.

there is, i dont want cables trailing about the place.

it would use anymore cables than a console, one for power, one for HDMI, sorted.

I don't what difference it makes anyway you'd have it by the tv with the cables all tidied like you would with anything else like DVD players etc.

my PC is somewhere else...if i had a media center pc then maybe...

I'm suggesting building a new one, to get the same quality graphics as a PS3 (ie not very good by PC standards) you could do it for around the same as a PS3, but you get better games/controlls/ and it'll do other stuff aswell. Also if your willing to pay more you can get a much better system.

You arent going to win Matty. its Yantorsen's oppinion therfore it must be fact

i got the ps3 and i cant fault it im currently trying to prize it outta my sons hands and put it on the 42 inch via hdmi in living room

What, like the ability to play Blu ray discs superbly, to upscale DVD's to "near blu ray quality", to update it's firmware regularly to give you even more functions and useability?
Sounds too good to be true
;)
