Help me put together a triptych in a frame?

Yes
Hope I spelled that correctly

I saw my Grandparents at New Year, I don't see them very often and they don't therefore get to see my kids too often either (they live South England, we live North Scotland!). We had a lovely visit to them, and I took some nice shots - one with my Gran and my toddler boy, one with her and my 4 year old girl, and one of my Grandad with both of them (a rare thing to get a decent shot with them both in, and it's not brilliant - none of them are brilliant, but am pleased with them and they defo convey love and a happy mood).

So I thought, as it's their birthdays this month, that I would do a triptych. I have no idea where to start, I haven't even had any of my photography printed before (I'm still relatively new, only had the camera since October).

Is Jessops and ok place to go for printing for something like this? (I can get to one on Saturday, but no other places nearby). And can you give me any recommendations for a frame? Do I get a frame with one window only, and make a black frame round each shot (with white background), or do I find a frame with three windows?

Would appreciate any help with this! I also have a pair of images of my toddler boy which are such fun (he's learnt a new party piece, his funny face ) and I thought it might look sweet as a diptych on his wall (so again, hopefully I can follow the advice you give me for this as well!).

If you look at this set, you'll see the first three shots in the set are of my grandparents/kids (I know the white balance is different in them all, will make uniform, think it's pref in the shots of my Gran?):

The last two images in the set are the two of my son (wearing his Daddy's hat!). Am sure I can improve these shots (for one, I forgot to crop out the doorframe on one!) so any suggestions also appreciated :-)

First thing. The grandfather image is 5:4 ratio. Of the other two, one is 3:2 ratio the other 7:5 ratio. All three images should be cropped to the same ratio. Sizes are usually 6x4 or 7x5 for frames with three images

Frames should not be hard to find though. Look in the yellow pages and there are a few online too.

Get them to make the mounts - images look better mounted and framed.

Ikea do nice cheap frames and I'm sure you'll get a 3 image frame. I use these guys (pretty local to me) http://www.calydee.com/index.php/frames.html

thanks EOS JD :-) I don't quite understand the ratio thing but does this mean the images might end up with a different crop? Shame if so.... (or perhaps you mean the orientation?).

I wish I had an Ikea nearby *sigh* but even though the council put in a strong request for Aberdeen having one, Ikea refuse, saying we can just drive down to Ed or Glasgow!

So - buy frames somewhere, then take them to a framers to do the mounts?

Will check out your link too :-)

the only thing with ikea is that their frames are a nightmare for printing out your own stuff. i bought some 5 panel frames and the images had to be cropped to something like 12.73 x 17.32cm or something daft.

when i've done multi frame stuff with family and friends i always try to make sure that the images at the left and right are 'looking inwards' or least giving that impression... it's a bit like when someone is sat with their legs crossed facing inward, it's a body language thing - you can create this yourself by rotating the image horizantally if needs be.

good luck.. some nice snaps there!

love the shots of your son with hat on...especially the funny face one

your camera takes images with a 3:2 ratio. That is your image can be printed without a crop at any size that has an image size that has one side 1.5x the other. 3/2 = 1.5 so - 6x4, 9x6 are the more popular sizes. As soon as you start cropping you are likely to be changing the shape (ratio). A 5:4 ratio can be printed as a 10x8 or a 6x4.8 - a slightly more square image - you see you can't make a 5:4 ratio image a 6x4 - you need to crop and change the ratio

A 5x4 is slightly more square than a 6x4 so you need to crop parts of your imagee to get this. Likewise a 7x5 image is different.

Crop each of your images using the same ratio then find a frame with apertures that match.

My local M&S had some half decent tryptich frames in, about £20 with the image windows being 7x5 portrait

thanks so much for all your replies, really quick help needed as leaving in 10, so sorry to not reply properly to everyone, but am I right to think that the closest ratio to 7x5 is 4x3? (and therefore 5x7 is 3x4 portrait?).

I like the idea of the Marks triptych portrait frame very much, but the crops at 3x4 cut some of the faces off e.g. ears etc. Whereas the 4:3 crop is perfect.... but then it wouldn't be a triptych, it would be down the way instead.... which option is preferable?

Better cropping and 3 pictures top to bottom, or not quite as nice crops with a left to right orientation of the 3 pics?

just popping on to say thanks again for the help. EOSJD, your link to the framers doesn't work. I've had them printed in landscape and portrait so I can choose, but am having trouble locating a triple aperture frame - will post a new thread. SK617, the Marks one sounds great but not on their website - can't get into town any time soon.

Just try http://www.calydee.com - There should be some more local to you though.

Also Next usually do them.

5x7 and 3x4 are two different ratios a 3x4 is same as 6x8. THis is not the same as a 5x7 and you'll have to trim
