Hi, I've been following the film side of things for a while now, occasionally looking with envy at the photos posted in here! However never really put a lot of time into film shooting.
Long story short a colleague convinced me that black and white developing isn't the voodoo magic that I thought it was and that I should give it a go, so I have!

I followed the simple guide on here and developed a roll of Ilford HP5+ with Ilfosol 3, Ilfostop and Rapid Fixer. I must admit the feeling of opening that developing tank and seeing the negatives beats any sort of feeling I've had from digital photography hands down!

My question to all of you is, do my negatives look 'right'? I was going to send a strip away to be scanned however I realised I had no idea if my negative are actually processed correctly!

Excuse the crude backlight and mirror shots that using up the last few test shots necessitated!

Thanks for any advice!

Adam

It is a little difficult to tell from these shots but they look to be ok to me.

It is a wonderfully satisfying feeling isn't it, opening the tank and revealing the magic that is fillum...... I never tire of it.

Actually it is Voodoo magic...yep get them scanned..shoot more..buy a scanner..

Aye that ^^^^^^ :)

They look alright to me :) Get 'em scanned and posted on here for us to see :D

If you're planning on doing a lot more film in the future then you might want to look into getting second hand scanner such as the Epson V500. Scanning is usually the expensive part of sending a film off to the lab so if you're going to develop your film yourself then it makes total sense to scan it too :) A scanner will pay for itself really quickly from the money you save from not paying a lab to scan them :)

Looks OK to me but IMO slightly soft which could be an advantage for a portrait of a pretty girl.......lots of thing to learn from high to low key, soft or contrasty negs for different subjects, pushing film for high ISO etc....have fun.

Get a scanner and off you go,

Rhodese.

A mate of mine has just got himself an Epson V550 scanner brand new from Currys/PCworld for just £179 and it's a fantastic bit of kit, so next time you are in town it might be worth popping in and taking a look! It scans 35mm and medium format negs and it will save you money in the long run ;)

I also paid £179 for a V550 from Currys haha  Paid for itself pretty quickly. Not sure how much it costs to get 35mm scanned as I pretty much just shoot 120, but my scanner paid for itself after about a dozen rolls

...not forgetting the older scanners i.e. Epson 3200 and 4990 if you don't mind buying S\H and saving money......you can always get your money back on the bay.

Congrats on your first film!

With regard to scanners, I'd only buy one if you're looking to shoot a fair proportion of black and white. Others will probably disagree with me, but I personally don't think they're worth the expenditure in time or money for scanning colour negative film and recommend using a pro lab instead.

First of all thanks to the masses of replies and advice here! Big thanks for the preview as well Rhodese!
Scanner wise I'm looking at getting one but won't be for a while yet, need to shift some equipment around :)
In the mean time can anyone recommend a decent scanning service that I can send this roll off to?

Thanks again for the replies! Much friendlier feeling here than other parts of the forum!

Thanks

Adam

Photo Express will scan a roll of cut processed film for a fiver I think, plus £1 return postage... might be worth a phone call first to check. Ask if they'll give the discount they do for processing for TP members (50p per film). They do a nice 2000 ppi scan, compared with most low res scans at 1200 ppi; that extra resolution helps a lot (6mp vs 2 mp).

I think Photo Express look to be the way forward after phoning a couple of local places today and getting some hideous quotes!
I also found time to shoot a 24 roll of Ilford FP4 Plus today, so back to the developing tank tonight, feel I may have a bit of an addiction coming along..
Now what to sell to fund a scanner... :D

There's no handle on this side, its a peculiarity of forum software, it can't be fixed......you're stuffed

stick a wedge under the door next time Marcel puts the cat out..

A draft you say.... I had assumed it was an I'll wind from Mr Raglan Surf. :D

After another successful develop just now I'm afraid to say that I'm a bit obsessed with the magic of the Paterson tank. Are there any film gods that I need to leave a sacrifice to so that the magic continues? [emoji1]

I think you'll find its not a draft I emit, more a fragrant breeze

Yes, you must leave a sacrifice to the great God Rod-inol. A goat or a bottle of fine Scotch should do it. :D

I believe in cutting out the middleman - just jump straight to large format. You know it makes sense.

Then put a roll film back on the LF camera and you have the best of all worlds. You can even develop 5x4 in a Paterson tank with the right insert.
:D

Thanks for that.

Oooh, blimey O'Reilly - that's taken me a step closer to making a decision.

I feel a medium format camera is on its way next;)

Please don't fuel the temptation, I've already been looking at which of my Fuji lens' to shift so that I can fund my way into the medium format world, I think I also instinctively chose the V550 over the V370 because it can do medium format, future proofing and all that, good investment as I told my girlfriend ;)

Oscar Wilde memorably said "I can resist anything except temptation".....

That's not what I need to hear! *puts fingers in ears* LA LA LA LA LA!

I am determined that I will not be going large format... Determined I tell thee......damn, damn, damn get thee behind me LuciFer.:)

But it's so convenient, you don't need to finish a roll, the quality is fantastic, lovely tones and if you ever do transparency then just think of the enormous stained glass window.

But they look so nice and they take such great images.... they're not that expensive either when you look into it...

But you know the CMS would be angry and you promised not to buy anymore cameras.....

but IMO slightly soft
I think this is due to poor camera technique not the way the file is developed.
