Hi All

Just thought i would introduce myself and say hello. Have taken the plunge into the world of SLR photography, used to do a bit as a child but nothing major and have over the last 10 years or so just used compacts for snapping. So really I'm a new be to the world of photography. After much research and deliberation I got the canon 40d with the 17 - 85mm lens for the cash I got for my 30th birthday last month so am now setting out on my photographic journey. I'm having some lessons with a local photographer/ teacher to help me get the basics but any advice to a new comer would be greatly appreciated. particularly on essential kit, and things the more experienced photographers on here did which think benefitted them as they started out

I don't know where my journey will take in terms of the type of photography I'll get more passionate about. I have a passion for sport (Rugby, cricket, football in the main) and already have a desire to explore this but understand that good long lenses are needed and don't come cheap, so any advice on starting out in this field would be greatly appreciated too.

I'm really excited about what I've learnt so far and what lies ahead, and what I have seenon this site. I can see this site as somewhere I'll be visiting a lot and hopefully posting some pictures on here for your critique (if I have the confidence to).

Thanks :)

Hey Noodles! :)

Welcome. These forums have helped me so much already. Very friendly and very honest.

Regarding long lenses. I picked up my sigma lens 70-300mm on ebay brand new for £90.00 delivered. I can capture excellent football shots without worries. Just to put your mind at rest regarding money!!

Things that I have needed/help are:

Tripod (long exposures and landscapes)
MonoPod (sport)
2nd Battery (for them long uses or forgot to charge!)
2nd Mem Card (it filled up at a football match and missed the last 10 minutes!)
Good carry bag (youll get more kit!!)
Adobe Lightroom.(to sort, adjust and crop your pics!)
Polarising Filter for (blues in the sky and water and to help keep reflections down)

Enjoy!

Thanks SB, it's re-assuring to know that I can get some sports shots without it costing the earth. I do find a lot of the information I read about sports lenses confusing as I just want to make a start on capturing sports shots and a lot of the information on the web is from pro sports photographers who wouldn't use anything but the best L lenses. unfortunatly like most my budget is limited. Thanks too for the list. The only two items I don't have on there are the Monopod and Abode lightroom. (which I'll get)

Welcome to the forum Noodles ...

There are free programs available to process your photos

You should have one that came with your camera.

Google "Gimp" as a good free alternative to Photoshop

Noodles,

You can get a free 30 day trial of photoshop and lightroom from Adobe's website :)
