This place has changed me...;)

when i first came on here. i had just got a kodak dx7590 bridge camera..
went out taking a few shots of the kids" as you do" posted on here got some constructive feedback on how to improve on the shots.... so took advice and moved on...

now two years down the road

and alot of money spend on this new found hobbie. i find myself looking at all pictures in a totally new way...

on the one hand i am very new to all this in the scale of things and i like to say nice shot well done keep posting..

but:suspect: on the other hand with all the bits i have learnt. i like to try and help people to get the best out of what they can. without trying to come across as someone who knows everything with all the help i have had i try to give back as much as possible..

does anyone else find it hard to say what you feel about a picture. and not what you should say about a picture..

just having my own little rant..........

md:thumbs:

yes Tp has changed me i have learnt loads and i love the community feel. I always try to say what i feel about pictures, but yes it can be very hard espically when your indifferent to the picture for whatever reason.

Not a rant m8 just a statement of facts many of us can identify with Dave ...

And I have to say YES ... to your question ... :suspect: ... would I be here at silly o'clock typing messages to people I don't even know and have never ever met if I had not been affected by this place ...

Mad it is ... ... but true it is also ... ;)

Nice to know you all and not to have met you ... :naughty:

:p

I've only just joined, so not yet, but I'm sure it will. And to answer your question, I don't know what to say about the pictures or how to critically analyse them, although I'd love to know the "secret", I'm sure in time I'll learn.

It's changed my bank balance

Yes TP has helped me no end and changed the way I look at photographs all for the better.

Sometimes I do see images that everyone raves about and I think why, but I guess that just personal choice.

TP hasn't changed me per se, as I've beeen a photographer for 12 years now. However, what it has done is re-ignite my passion for photography.

I've spent the past seven years working in publishing, doing photoshoots for the magazine I edit. It's great, enjoyable work but it's 'photography by numbers' most of the time because it's an instructional magazine that demands clear photography over anything arty. That's the nature of instructional magazines.

To be honest, even though I've had my works kit sitting at home on most days, I never used it other than for work, which was a shame because I have always enjoyed photography since my first day doing my HND. But it's felt like a busman's holiday at times because the last thing I wanted to do after a shoot was go home and take more shots. The number of shots I've done for myself between 2002 and 2006 can be counted on one hand... and that's sad for someone who effectively has photography in their blood.

TP has definitely reinvigorated my passion though, as looking through everyone's galleries and the competition entries has made me realise I have a long way to go before I'm really up there. You definitely can't force photography – it just comes naturally – and I think that with the work I've been doing for the mag, it's not been the thing i've wanted to say i'm that proud of.

I specialised in darkroom D & P at university and made a bit of a name for myself within the college for quality studio work and prints and I was proud of that. The switch to digital was a big thing to me; I fought and fought digital until I couldn't fight its use anymore. Yes, it's much more efficient (and cost effective) to use digital over film these days and the results are brilliant with the modern technology we have. The thing I missed were the 'hands-on' parts that film photography and printing had in spades. It's only recently (about the time I joined TP) that I've given in to digital for my own work and now I embrace it wholeheartedly.

I sold my Bronica kit last year, which was a bit of a turning point for me, but I knew in my heart of hearts, it would become just an ornament on the shelf. My old 35mm EOS stuff is still with me but that's only because it's worth nack all! I bought a D200 in January and I'm loving using it.

I've used Photoshop since 1995 but only bought CS2 last year and that's also helped me embrace digital photography. I suppose I'm a bit of a stick-in-the-mud at times but even though I'm only 28, I've seen some major changes that many late-comers to photography won't be able to appreciate, and it makes it hard to let go of 'traditional' photography that I grew up with. Mind you, I'm now on Chapter 2 and loving doing my website, teaching people at work about photography and exploring what you can actually do to make an image better through software.

I think when you have a resurgence of faith and passion in something that you love so dearly, you're only kidding yourself if you don't take on board and learn from what others have to say. The internet is great for getting feedback and I'd be gutted if I posted a shot on TP and all I got was "Nice pic" or "that's pretty". Okay, if I don't like something (and there's plenty on here that's a bit gash – just look in the Nudes & Glamour section) I will be constructive but don't want to ruin someone's life for the sake of an opinion. It is essential to tell people the truth though, it's just a question of how you do it. If TP posters show their images they should expect to receive comments but as long as those comments are truthful and constructive to their learning, then that's job done in my book.

Wow - think I should stay off the fags and beer this time of night!! :)

Yes it's changed the way I look at things. Take this past weekend when we went to Fantasy Island market ... I spotted some huge bins and thought I would have a look as I need some new ones. The size lured me in I will admit it :naughty:. Chirs picked them up first and said "Flipping heck these are good Jo! You can see really far!". So I took them from his palms and lifted them to my eyes. I was soooo dissapointed :shake: The guy on the stand was blathering on about what a great deal it was and since he could see I was a keen photographer, having a very expensive lens around my neck ( red flag shot up again, since the lens is only a £90 sigma) he would cut me an even better deal. But my reply was this "Nah, there is terrible purple fringing on the lenses and the colour is also way off balance" He looked taken back and miffed  Then tried to tell me that all the expensive bins are like this .. they are professional ones. I just laughed and asked Chris to push me further away.

I would have not had a clue about any of this before joining TP and getting more serious about photography! I'd have probably snapped his hand off. So if nothing else TP saved me £65 for a pair of crap bins this past weekend :D

I have been a member for about 4 days, the amount of stuff i have learnt is unbeleivable.
All you guys are great and i could happily spend all day on here.

So, YES, TP has changed me.

So, YES, TP has changed me.

hehe a lot of us do spend all day on here:cuckoo:

If i keep it up,i will be in the same boat.
Wonder if i can get it on my mobile?????

YEP, you can, well on mine anyway.

i would say i havent changed but learnt a lot, and it is always satisfying to know there is so many people on here willing to help.

When I first found TP I was just starting to take an interest in photography and wanted to find some information about courses and photography in general when I happened across the site. I'd never been a member of a forum before so that was new too. I found to my surprise a lovely community of people willing to crit my images and help me along on my journey of photography discovery. It has been one massive learning curve being a member of TP and I'm so glad I found it. My love of photography has grown and blossomed and I can't go anywhere without my trusty companion. I see potential photographs everywhere and have been inspired no end by some of the wonderful and creative photographs I've seen on here.
Any way I'd like to take the opportunity to say thank you to everyone on here who has been an inspiration and form of support in one way or another.

Keep up the good work folk

I was going to keep this short

Well I am certainly more in debt since I found this site if that counts

I have learnt so much in such a relative short space of time due to this site. Before TP I used to read the occasional book and mag but not really take it all in, some information just frustrated me as I couldn't reproduce the result. However with TP I have personally received and read such sound friendly advice that my pictures are leaps and bounds ahead of where they were. I am now proud of some of my pictures and want to share them with others and that to me was want I wanted to achieve from photography.

One other benefit that I didn’t even think about before TP is that I am now able to offer advice to others and help them further develop their skills, both on TP and in person. I had an experience the other day when a friend of mine was struggling with his photography and getting really down about it. I was able to spend some time with him and step him through the basics and help him with his camera. The next time I saw him he was really happy as his shots from the day were so much better than before. A good moment for me :D

Still have a loooong way to go but I enjoy learning so I guess I'll stick around

Definitely

My confidence is way up and I'm understanding a hell of a lot more about how to actually take photographs.

:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs: Thanks all

It's a very expensive lesson though

Yes its changed me!

The plus side is that I now have some idea of how to get pictures that work fairly well in one sphere to the point where friends are asking me to get photos of them, but to more than counteract that this site has sent my frustration levels soaring when I look at the ones in the galleries knowing however hard I try there is no way I can get anything like that sort of quality :bang::bang: my poor laptop has been close to going out of the window when I see some of them

It has certainly changed me - I'm definitely much more critical of my own photograpy now. What I thought was a good shot beforehand, I now see as not so good. I've almost become a bit of a perfectionist and bin more shots than I keep. That's saying something as I like to get things right in camera without having to spend hours in PS, so don't take hundreds of shots at a time.
I've also had the pleasure of meeting some truly inspirational and fab people via TP - you all know who you are ;)

I'd say so. When I came across the site I was just starting to think about photography. I read on here for a while and decided I should give it a go. A year later, and I've moved to Australia to study photography, and its now the only source of my (meagre) income.

So in a way, I suppose this place has had a bigger impact on my life than most things.

Yes it has. I now look and see rather than just look , if that makes sense.

I have learned a mass of stuff (with loads to go of course) and not just about photography.

Birds, Flowers, Insects, Places they're all covered here.

And of course the people :D a fine bunch all of 'em!!!!

Good to know you :D

It's certainly changed me. Apart from my photographic technique, and my greater appreciation of the photograph and what it entails.........

I'm more tired, less time, and I don't see my wife as much as I should :D

glads its not just me then..

md:thumbs:

TP has changed me in a few ways:

1. I'm now totally skint after you guys introduced me to Mr. Kerso (bought far too much!) Of course totally your fault.

2. It gives me something to do instead of watching the soaps, during the week as my missus and daughters always seem to do. :cuckoo:

3. It's enabled me to get excellent advice when needed. :)

4. And I love using these smilie things :):clap::bang::lol::woot:

Seriously though it's great having this forum at my fingertips as its really good to chat with similar minded people. It will only improve my knowledge of photography.
Mark.:)

not yet but after reading some posts its helping me and i am taking on board whats said in ways to help and its working so far

It's definitely changed me, it makes being stuck working on my computer all day bearable

People here are a constant source of inspiration which has kept me enthusiastic about my photography & the amount of help both given & received has always been excellent - this is the only forum I've ever stuck with (I definitely don't spend enough time with my girlfriend either though )
