......resulted in people taking an interest in bronze medal winner Chris Froome's exploits in La Vuelta a España over there? Or was people's interest in the sport a transient thing relating to the games?
He's had a great year, 2nd in Le Tour, bronze in the Olympic TT. It would be great if he could bag his first Grand Tour in this event.
 
The games has had an impact but so did Le Tour, it has been building for quite some time and more so since we have had Team Sky boosting the 'Britishnesss' (I know Team Sky is not all British)

Just got back from Norway so missed part of the Vuelta. I see ITV 4 are doing an hour long highlights program every night. I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

True, but it's not one of the 3 Grand Tours so not as interesting. Though Wiggins will be riding for Sky.

I think Cav is riding the Tour of Britain this year as well.

Back on topic... I would hope people would now take notice but i have a feeling now the hype of the games is waining so will interest.

I have always been interested in cycling, but interest in the Vuelta a Espana is probably a follow on from this year's TdF and the Olympic games, where many people identify sporting success and cycling as being linked.
How many people realise that in last year's Tour of Spain, Chris Froome finished second and Bradley Wiggins third overall?
Cycling is now a sport which the Brits can feel proud about, and I would hope that it changes some people's negative attitudes towards cycling.
 
It might change some peoples interest but the majority, I suspect, will only have watched the cycling because it was part of the Olympics.

I did Andy. I always watch the 3 Grand Tours. Wherever he finishes this year, no one can deny Chris Froome has had a great year.
 
I think that interest in cycling will taper off but it is still high at the minute. The next round of the track cycling world cup is in Glasgow in November and the public sale of tickets was yesterday at 11am. They had sold out before 12.

My first recollection of cycling was in the seventies, when I heard on the radio that Barry Hoban had won a stage of the Tour de France. When I joined a cycling club in 1979, Paul Sherwen was racing, and in 1981 I had the pleasure of racing against Sean Yates just before he turned professional for Peugeot.
I think that TV coverage of the TdF and the Vuelta has helped enormously, along with the city centre races and the Tour of Britain.

Can't we talk about how the motorcyclists are nearly knocking the competitors off the road in the Vuelta a Espana and did you hear the cars' tyres squealing on some of the bends in the descent yesterday?

Froome's still in with a good chance I feel, even if he did lose a few seconds yesterday.

I think yesterday was good. Yes he lost a few second to the leader, but he put more space between himself and Contador and Valverde.
 
Reading updates from the beach. Seems to have been a tough day for Froome. Still second overall though at the end of the first week.
 
Here's an update for all the fairweather fans of British cycling.

Today's stage in La Vuelta a España was an ITT. Britain Christopher Froome came in 3rd behind making up time against the race leader. He's now in 3rd place overall and only 16 seconds behind. Not a bad place to be.

nice as it is you posting todays results - here in the UK a lot of people cannot watch this till after work and seeing the results here before actually seeing the show will upset a few folks so I would suggest a separate thread with spoiler tags attached - if you want to post the days results:thumbs:

and as regards the race it is boiling up well Froome looked not his usual self today
hardly surprising though considering the hard season he has had

I missed the days racing (and I'm not one for ITT if I'm honest) so I appreciated the short update :)

Hi there! There are 3 Grand Tours; Il Giro d'Italia, followed by Le Tour de France, then La Vuelta a España. Eurosport covers it live, so I assume British Eurosport does too. Probably highlights on ITV4 too. Some cracking stages coming up over the next few days.

I wonder if we'll manage to have the day of the Tour of Britain in the north west this year. All the signs are up for it on my way to work. It was cancelled last year due to bad weather. Its got a couple of weeks to improve.

I went to Stage 1 of Le Tour de France a few years back when it was in the UK. What an amazing experience!
 
That was a brutal end to today's stage. Not the best day for Christopher Froome either.
 
There's a hill near me not more than 400 metres long that tips 30 percent at its worst and I can't even cycle up it (yet!), I dread to think of what it would be like if there was another 1600m of it like at the end of today's stage! :puke:
 
There's a good stage live on tv right now folks. A Brit won yesterday's.
 
To be quite honest I don't think Froome has ever looked like a serious contender. Having done the Tour and the olympics it's hardly surprising he has less in his legs though!
