My current neighbour seems to have a fondness for those noisy, flappy pigeon critters. Sophie, whos house I'm staying in, has asked a couple of times for this chap not to feed the flapping things as she feels they deter nicer birds from visiting.
I'm more bothered about the noise they make at 6 in the morning and wonder if one of these plastic owls might be effective

I recall those being used in Glasgow Central railway station to scare the pigeons. Worked initially, but the pigeons got used to them. Maybe help if you had several things like that and rotated their use.

We used to have trouble with pigeons sitting on the roof over my sons bedroom, they used to make a right racket and mess down the wall. Anyway I acquired a very life like crow, complete with feathers and hubby gaffer taped it on the ridge, it worked for while but one day the next door neighbour came round to tell me that he had had a most amusing afternoon watching a pigeon trying to mate with the crow  A few weeks later I found the poor old crow on the patio and judging by the state of it I think quite a few pigeons must have taken a fancy to it

One of my many "one that got away" pics was of a pigeon sitting on top of a fake owl "bird scarer". I was on a bus at the time and didn't have a chance to get my camera out.

Last winter I had a pigeon on my window ledge for a couple of months. He wasn't really causing any harm apart from the mess. I tried putting a ceramic cat by the window as that had worked with a squirrel a few years earlier but the pigeon just ignored it.

Once the breeding season started he vanished so I assume he's shacked up with some bird somewhere.

you got me wondering if the neighbours have been making pigeon pies alll this time now

Our local greggs uses an owl (plastic), confused the hell out of me but it seems to stop the pigeons and gulls

I've seen them used at a number of football grounds too. A couple in each stand usually.

A quick flash in the face with a low powered laser pointer usually results in :exit: by the pigeon.

I have had pigeon damage to an area newly seeded to grow a lawn. Resorted to re-seedong covering it with plastic netting until it is established. Had a look at various immitation birds of prey, but the published customer reviews suggest that they are generally ineffective.

The owls are a waste of money - as stated they work for a few days then the birds get used to the inactivity and correctly work out that there is no threat.

If you want something that will work on a permanent basis have a look at this stuff Pigeonoff

I put out feeders in my garden and seem to be feeding the local wood pigeon population

the only upside is that these do taste good in a pie that was suggested earlier

If it's meant to scare off pigeons wouldn't it also scare off the 'nicer birds' too?

Lay off the Old Spice and loud shirts and the nicer birds shouldn't run away from you.
