Hajj stampede: At least 220 killed in Saudi Arabia

Up to 310 dead now oh man

Oh I know did you see the 1990 incident over 1400 died.
very sad

up to 310 now

A definitive total won't be available for quite some time.
Are updates (two of them the same number) really necessary?

yip and 800 od hurt

It is tragic and it happens on such a regular basis. Many of the people use their life savings to attend the Hajj at least once in their lifetime.

Yes it is considered one of the things a Muslim must do in their lifetime if they can afford it.

Well, they were trying to stone the Devil and as the Devil said "let he who is without blame cast the first stone". Looks like a risky business.

Errrr.....not quite.

I don't think I'm making fun of them. I think they are behaving very foolishly and my point is, in a roundabout sort of way, is that if they really believe they are stoning the devil then they are behaving foolishly.

My understanding is that they represent the Devil. The current 'pillars' (actually walls) were only built in 2004.

And whilst an atheist myself, I see nothing clever about mocking people's beliefs at a time of tragedy. Foolish or not, nobody deserves to die in such an appalling manner.

Wow. Offensive to Muslims and Christians in one short post.

I feel this deserves some kind of award.

If I were a citizen of Saudi Arabia the Govt would be quite keen to have me stoned and/or beheaded/crucified and many of those people (based on how crowds generally behave, not only Muslims) would probably be quite happy to oblige. Stonings etc are very popular there and attract large crowds.

BTW Muslims on a personal level are often lovely people, "they know not what they do" but not being a Christian I do not have to forgive them ; (

How is this relevant to people dying in a stampede at a religious ceremony?

but not being a Christian
We gathered as much when you confused Satan and Jesus.

There are so many terrible tragedies in the world. How many have ISIS killed today, how many have died of cancer today, how many have been killed in car accidents today?

True, but how many of those deaths happen at one time and in one place?
Most deaths are tragic, but mass death like this is shocking to those with the capability to be shocked and / feel compassion.

Not often, but add up the numbers of these things and its quite galling just how many these things kill each day.

Any large groups of people in confined areas IMHO is a receipe for disaster if something goes wrong. Plane crashes etc (the larger the plane the more people on it etc) and you can easily have this number of people killed in one go. I'm just dreading the day a full A380 goes down full of folk.

How many died in 9/11, way more than this.

AS ever, you miss the point entirely.

I once dived on a ship out in the red sea called the Salem Express quite a few years after it sank, it went down with over 500 dead and it was a traumatic experience to say the least even without the bodies, all the luggage and personal belongings all stacked up and abandoned. It was a true test of my faith as a Christian to ask myself how a god could allow this tragedy and I feel for the families that now will have to come back from this one.

I'm not confusing them. If you believe in that sort of thing they are different aspects of the same "person" ie god.

Calling it a religious ceremony is no doubt technically correct but you could also call it a religious frenzy which is my view and borne out by the tragedy of so many unnecessary deaths.
I referred to the stonings and beheadings in Saudi earlier. These too are religious ceremonies. They are so popular and attracted such excited crowds that the Saudis have taken to not announcing them in advance.
Although it's not an exact comparison you have to remember what the Christians were like at a similar time in the development of their religion ie around 1300CE - they have calmed down a bit now but it has taken a long time.

Stop digging the hole!

I sort of get the point. If you are religious in that sense, then you can't get away from it that God must have had a hand in these tragic events as well. The question to ask is then; why? Why would God allow that to happen to so many people?

This post is stupid and ignorant (i'm attacking the post, not the poster in accordance with the forum rules).

Why? Can you elaborate. These stonings etc do happen as per sharia law which is based around the religion of the area which is...guess what...Islam...

Nope. Not biting. Go back to your empty life hiding under the bed from everything.
