So. This weekend I was down on the Jurassic coast, Dorset with my girlfriend taking some photos of the cracking locations that part of the coast line has to offer. Weather was a bit naff on Saturday, but stunning on Sunday. No hitches, no mishaps, no real dramas apart catching some really stunning light in places. Now on this trip, as you do, one meets and chats briefly to other photographers at what ever location you're at and the usual pleasantries are exchanged; flickr, weather, where you're from, etc etc. I really like this. I like meeting other like minded people and having a good old natter about this and that! It's how people should be to one another, and adds a definite positive extra dimension to the whole experience.
However.
What really ticks me off, is not when people don't want a quick chat, but instead when people (other photographers) are just outright rude and discourteous. For example. At a certain location, one photographer went and perched ones' self slap bang in the middle of a rather prominent shelf of rock and remained there until the sun had completely gone. Now, during this happening, a few other photographers went and asked, I believe, if he would be there all night, to which he replied "yes". This is despite there being at least 8 other photographers at the scene all wanting to catch a similar piece of the action. I should add at this stage that all said other photographers were on scene before this person went and perched. In frustration, and probably to make a point, the same people that asked this chap went and perched right in front of him. The best part was when this chap then went and asked them if THEY were going to be there all night! I find this rather hypocritical, and frankly the whole situation was rather pathetic. It really doesn't take much to all get along and generally have a bit of consideration for others!
I wont go into the details other other situations, but suffice to say that on no less then 2 other occasions, me or my girlfriend were met with short, curt and generally plain unfriendly responses to simple and friendly questions such as "Am I in your shot here?" or "Had a successful day?" or even "do you want to come past this way if that way is too slippery?" (on account of the nasty purple algae that is exceptionally slippery).
All I want to say is that it doesn't take much to be nice and friendly, even if in fact you don't want to stop and chat etc. Being pleasant with people is hardly an effort, and frankly it can really put a downer on other peoples day if you frankly just being a miserable sod.
So, people of talkphotography! Be nice to one another, whoever you may be or meet. It's not hard, and can sometimes just make the difference to someones day.
