Just got this email from a Rugby U16 manager whose team I photographed a couple of months back. It's regarding a photo of his son.

"Hi Phil,

The Photo is number 23 from the game against Headingley. A 6x4 would do not sure I want to purchase!! it a freebie would be nice.

See you Saturday.

Craig" :bang:

The flaming cheek of it. Seriously I wouldn't dream of sending someone something like this.

Now I know I am not a professional but when you have spent just short of £6,500 on gear in order to take these images it seriously pi$%es me off when you get someone not willing to pay £7 for a 7x5.

I need a cuppa to cool down.:annoyed:

Give him the freebie and then tell him that this is a favour.
All future pics would have to be paid for.

Not really worth losing sleep over

tell him you don't do freebies and you are having to increase cost from next week to counter reduced sales, increased consumables costs.

Give him a big 7 x 5 print with a water-mark slap bang in the middle :D

tell him you don't do freebies but you'll exchange a photo for 20mins with his wife lol

on the other hand are you more likely to get substantial work as a result of keeping him sweet?

ok he runs the U16's but to be honest I can go down and shoot them whenever I like really. All the shoots I do I do for free, as I am just wanting the practice at the moment. The least I ask is that any decent shots I manage to get must be paid for as prints.

I think this shot is worth £7

Your not a pro so don't need the money to survive, even if you were a pro the cost of your gear is irrelevant and someone sent you a chekky email looking for a freebie get over it. This is hardly a big deal I try the same trick with my neighbours kids everytime I catch them washing their old mans car, hasn't worked but it might one day!

So by not being a pro, means I don't need the money . So it's quite alright for me to work full time doing another job and to then spend money I earn from that job on printing a free photo for someone........riiiiight I see where I'm going wrong now

I'd charge him more like £70, but there you go...
Regardless of your being Pro/Am, his email takes the 'P' IMO...

I'd refuse point-blank...

Tell him it's £7 'as a favour' now or £70 the next time he asks...

If the coach isn't a mate then I'd be inclined to do him a print exactly like you have on your website photo; with your copyright through the middle. He's getting what he asked for then. He gets a print and you get a bit of advertising through. The lad's mom is going to want to order a proper enlargement off you anyway once she she's the sample :-)

Well said that man  I have already emailed him saying I do not supply free prints. I just can't get over the pure cheek of it.

Send it him for free, with your big watermark diagonal across the picture.

Then tell him it was free because your advertising your business on it :)

Definitely charge him £7 and give him a watermarked print.

It's amazing how people don't value photographers work.

Probably planning to copy it, and provide said copies to rest of family (grandparents etc)!

It's a great shot, good work, make him pay.

Yep I would give him a freebie without question but there would be "COPYRIGHT" slapped across the front of it with a note saying how much it would cost without !!

Cheers for the comments guys.

This kind of attitude perhaps explains why sales have been slow form last weekends U11's cricket game I shot. I thought I might have sold a few of these http://www.philcarverphotography.com/portfolio105567p2.html
But if people have similar opinions/attitudes toward photography as this guy then maybe I'd best not get my hopes up.

:( Sorry to hear about this Philip.

It is a cracking shot - and one that he should definitely pay for.

fwiw i think they are well worth the money, if it were a child of mine i would pay  tell him to do one

My take . . . He's the manager and a token 6x4, lowish res, won't break the bank and may go a long way to him telling all the other players what great shots they are for this and future games.
Don't cut your nose off as the repercusions of a curt reply could cost you a whole lot more than one freebie. :)

I would print "charity proof for the poor" across the centre.

My worry with this may be that he would go off and tell others that he got his for free... or pester the OP with requests for more for himself or his mates.

BTW, its worth every penny of the £7!

To be honest I think it's worth a hell of a lot more than that and if it was my kid, I'd probably be wanting a lot bigger than 6x4.

Yes, it doesn't mean a thing, because those who shoot for a living just get all their gear handed to them for free! right?

I see your point, but I have already given a CD of lo res images for the club's website as part of the deal to let me photograph in the first place.......wait's for do nothing for free brigade

Back then I did this as a goodwill gesture. Now I have got better in my photography, and more serious in my equipment I am hoping to take this further, maybe one day get paid for shooting sports ( I wish). At no point did I ever offer free prints, as this involves costs on my side which i can't afford ro cover.

Ok, if you fell out with this guy where would it leave you? Do you NEED him?

Your shots are decent, I'll bet that if you stopped doing them and they stopped getting free images on cd for their website they'd soon realise the quality they had been getting had value.

Also, why not start branching out and contacting other team/league managers for local football, rugby, tennis etc etc etc. Got a local leisure centre? Get in touch with them too. Good for practice, good for networking.

Cheers John.

To be honest when I got this shot up on my Mac I was thinking this is the one image that I would make some money from. I didn't know who his parents were, and when no one contacted me about buying it I just put it down to them not being aware it was on my site.

(note to self need to find parents who appreciate good photography:thinking:)

Already doing this.

I shoot for a local open age football team. On Saturday I am shooting an all day event for my local Rugby club (which he is manager for the U16's) but this event involves U8's, U'9's plus open age. So going to be a decent day hopefully.

Also I have shot two age groups for my local Cricket team, and am due to do their U'9s on Monday.

Steadily branching out

In that case you've done more than enough on the goodwill front, I feel that's where the line should be drawn, or the freebie stuff will always be expected.

Some do :p

It shouldn't ever be given free, regardless of who it is. When I've worked with events companies in the past, even managers and organisers pay for their prints (organisers do sometimes get 'free' web sized files to put on the clubs though)
