I love driving! Some roads are just a joy to drive. Let's share some great routes. How about 1 in the UK and 1 overseas.

Mine would be:

UK.
A7 Carlisle to Edinburgh. The interesting was to arrive in Edinburgh from England. Has some fast places, some great scenery and some areas that require concentration. I've always been fond of it.

Overseas.
SS26/D1090 Pallusieux (Italy) to Seez (France)
An epic drive over the Col de Petit Saint-Bernard. I've started the route on a balmy Italian autumn afternoon, passed by the ski resort of La Thuile, entered a blizzard and world of white, only to then pass into beautiful sunset over stunning green French Alps.

uk - A57 Snake Pass in a hire car !!!

abroad - any mountainous road in a hire car trying to keep up with "Johnny local"
 
the bealach na ba (the pass of the cattle road) applecross
 
I don't know about any road in particular but the first time I drove a truck I had to take it straight through the centre of London. I enjoyed every minute of it. So much better than doing it with a car.

There is a road in North Devon with two fantastically steep hills next to each other. It's just like a roller coaster.

I would like to have a drive there again.

I think I've been on that road! I may have even squeaked weeeeeeeee on the descents.

Cat n fiddle is a good one. Trying to get ticketed in the specs section is an added challenge. Crapper the car you manage it on the better ;)
 
Portland Bill to Bournemouth Hospital in an Ambulance. No idea what the scenery was like, it was dark and I was tripping on morphine :nuts::nuts:
 
D417, Munster to Gerardmer, in the Alsace.
Grand St Bernard, Aosta to Martigny

And then of course there's Stelvio and the Glossglockner.

All fun on a bike, and actually, just as many giggles from the Mini too...
 
OK, some over seas roads:

Crowsnest Pass linking Alberta to BC. Some real good fast sections, followed with some up hill, down dale, switchback, single lane, edge of the road stuff. Not recommended to do when it's dark, foggy & raining. You are relying solely on the lights on your car; no cats eyes, no roadside lights, nothing.

Route 97 going from Yakima to The Dalles; nice scenic drive through the desert of lower Washington.

Route 2 from Browning, Montana, all the way through to Columbia Falls, MT. Passes through the lovely Glacier National Park.

One road I wanna drive at least once, is the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park, MT. The entire route isn't open all year round due to the ice & snow, and the authorities always say the entire route doesn't open fully until at least the end of June, and then it's absolute chaos due to everyone trying to drive it before it closes in Mid September. It gets as high as 6600ft at the peak.

And for some wonderful views, drive Highway 5 from Vancouver to the end of Jasper National Park. Cuts right through the Rockies and all sights inbetween.

foreign roads - garden route in SA.

the road Oudtshoorn down to knysna.. 100K of gravel and a rear wheel drive hire car...;)

It also had a lever between the front seats to activate the rear wheel steering system...

Gladly paid ZAR50 in Knysna to get it washed!!!
 
For a motorway - the M74; it is a joy.

Non motorway - so many the A66, A57 and the Pass of the Cattle definitely but also

A835/A832 from Contin to Gairloch, and

Aberdeen to Inverness via the A939 (quicker than the appalling A96 and much more spectacular).

Zig Zag hill Dorset, I really miss my 3.0 GTV on that road, nothing like kicking the back end out on a quiet evening!

Totally forgot about this drive, and stopping off at and walking to the Mt Athabasca glacier makes it even more worthwhile!
 
The Gottard pass from France to Italy.

The Route de Napolean from Grenoble to Grasse - particularly the bit around the Col Bayard.

Morphine??? You big southern softie. Heart attack No 1 I drove my self to hospital then drove to another 200 miles away. Grow a pair:p
 
Anything in the Yosemite/Kings Canyon/High Sierra areas in California - wonderful!

There's a brilliant road of fast downhill lacets that goes into the outskirts of Grenoble from Sisteron[?]! Is that it? I remember lifting rear wheels in a Renault 5 GT Turbo :woot: ... and still being beaten by a local in a Rover SD1 who really had the car on the limit! :eek:

Or for excitement at half the speed, the Abergwesyn-Tregaron mountain road in a small, narrow car with stiff dampers! Unless they've put speed limits and cameras on it these days or [unnecessary] speed humps!!
 
N7 from Cape Town to Springbok and beyond to Namibia, glorious scenery

N2 from Cape Town towards Port Elizabeth (this takes in the Garden Route)

N1 towards J'Burg also goes throught stunning scenery, and lots of tunnels and mountain routes

A8 Stuttgart to Munich - through some stunning alpine scenery

A542/A525 - Horseshoe Pass and Nant-y-Garth Pass
 
N7 Cape Town to Koringberg
N7/R311/R45/R27 Koringberg to Langebaan (off-roading in a ford focus saloon is an experience and a half!)

numerous roads in and around Kippford/Castle Douglas/Loch Awe etc
 
Porlock hill on the A39 in on the northern edge of Exmoor.
B3135 out of Cheddar
"Big Uplands" near Keynsham (there are some videos on youtube, I got my old Singer Chamois to the top once)

Agree.....with the exception of the road leading to Bodie.
I needed new teeth after driving that :lol:
 
Road from Interlaken to the Stechelberg which ends in Stechelberg because the Jungfrau is in the way. We camped there for a week and it is probably one of the most stunning locations in the world.

Stunning scenery and stunning roads, we did it in an old BMW 528i (E28), and the missus was getting very nervous on the narrow roads.
