Great roads to drive

Long gone are the days when driving was fun (on the highways), although it is (or will be soon, DVLA permitting...) a pleasure again. There are a few roads that I do enjoy being on - the A303/30 heading West in the evening, the A39 down the North coast of the Devon/Cornwall peninsula and the National Highway along the North coast of Crete. Too many speed cameras and other traffic about to really enjoy the roads these days.

A836 for me from Tongue to Bonar Bridge or the entire drive from Thurso round the north coast of Scotland through Durness and down to Ullapool - it is stunning for both the lack of traffic and the scenery - from mountain to heather moor to stunning beaches to dark forests, sea lochs and swampy valleys. Plus the Golden and White Tailed Eagles and Black Throated Divers along the way are a pleasant distraction!

I'm going to the Lakes next week, I had planned on M1/M6 but I think I'll go up to Scotch Corner and across on the A66 after reading this thread!

A more dramatic approach is to go up Teesdale to Alston then cross over to Penrith via Hartside Pass - http://goo.gl/maps/IkKVo

The A66 is good though for a (mostly) dual carriageway, and a better choice if the weather is poor.

So, a few years ago, there's around 6 of us on a bike trip and we're staying in the town of Besancon, France. We then come across this bit of road in a place called Ste Croix, on the French/Swiss border. After going up and down about a dozen times we had to go and get some more petrol....

Grange Le Cote

In the middle of nowhere a natural helter-skelter !
