weekly Gramps' Photo52 2012 - Week 30 'Contrast' added

Where was it taken ? It looks like a good route from what I can see

It's in the Avon Gorge in Bristol, I think that these are some of the 'nursery' climbs as a group of women appeared to be getting instruction (not meaning to sound sexist ladies!).
The Gorge is a very popular site for climbers and gets quite a few most weekends - I am led to believe that there are some difficult climbs too ... e.g.:-

Cracking root photograph.

Great detail, great colours and I'm liking how the climber is clinging on and working hard to climb.

For me, just a tad off the top.

Cheers.

Hi Gramps

good take on the theme....barking mad doing that...trusting a root on the side of a mountain  Like the detail & color in the rocks as well

Industry -
#1 Really like the first shot you did for this, love the muted tones, and just enough contrast for me. Creates a moody ominous picture. Great in B&W.

#2 The second industry has some really nice strong contrast. Love the all black foreground, and some great tones in the smoke (looks a bit like a tornado), some interesting detail in the distance to the right.
The only problem I have with the second is the shape of the frame, I'd like more of a landscape frame, I think it needs more space on the right to balance it (for my eyes).

Root -
I like the opportunistic nature of the picture, you got that moment. I also like that the climber looks like shes got her hand on hip. I'd really like to see a B&W version.

It reminds me of some old pictures I've seen of hikers and explorers, using early camera technology. With high contrast and grain those pictures were really special and captured moments we take for granted now.

I've been thinking of taking up rock climbing - I'm told you don't need strong arms (mine are quite weak), but I don't know...

however I love your take on the theme, good shot

Yeah i know where you are talking about in some of my Sapir time I do hot air ballooning and we usually drive to Bristol every year to fly in the festa

I really like root - I wonder if a B&W conversion would be good as the bright colours on the climber compete for attention with the root itself.

Thanks to others for your comments :)

Hi Gramps,

Nothing like smoke beltching from a chimney to scream industry.
Good shot, like it.
Root, well spotted, like both the colour and b&w conversion but colour is my fav.
Really makes the climber stand out. wouldn't get me doing that!

Carol

Colour for me as well :D

Another vote for the colour version here Gramps
A great opportunity taken, its got great composition with the diagnol running through the frame. The climber appears very casual whilst hanging from the root giving the image a candid feel which makes for a strong image. Good work. Iain

the colour one is the way to go as her top is too bright in the B&W

Totally agree

Cheers Iain, I was pleased with it ... sometimes you struggle to get something, other times you're just going down the road and there it is :)

You are quite right to be pleased with it Gramps, its a great image.
I think you make your own luck with these things, you put yourself in a position by getting out there and it paid dividends :)

Went to get my 'Handmade' photo today, only to find my target out of reach due to an area being closed off :( however went to a nearby boatyard to see if I could find any 'Handmade' opportunities there ... and lo and behold a small boat sitting under a tarpaulin, getting a makeover with a new 'cockpit'!!! ...

After some hard work in getting agreement to take the photo, "Don't get too close!", "You're not taking my photo!", etc, I managed to take this.

It's a busy picture but by it's nature I think that is acceptable, I would have liked to make a few changes but was not able to do so.
I still have a desired image for this theme but not sure yet whether or not I am going to be able to get it ... we shall see.

Good on you Gramps for getting out there and pushing yourself to get get the shot which is perfectly on theme btw, the clutter doesn't matter as the record is showing just how it was. ;)

I like that a lot! I'd have liked to see a closer one, but in addition, not instead of this one.

nice one gramps another top pic:thumbs: and once again bang on theme!

Nice one, love to see some of the old traditions still alive!

Lovely colour on the wood and the blue hull too.

Nice one Gramps, with the shot being busy it adds to the photo.

Thanks all ... I was warned not to get too close!!!

Good set of pics you've got going on gramps.....good to see some crafts are still alive..

As has been said, closer would be nice. I like the way the red straps kind of funnel your eyes towards the boat.

Very nice image this week Gramps. Yes perhaps a little busy but it works you can't always choose the environment can you. Nice subject and fits the brief well.
