weekly Gramps' Photo52 2012 - Week 30 'Contrast' added

That looks great to me; I love the colours and the DoF.

I have a job to do at the Hotel Chocolat factory soon; if only the timing had been right, I could have got some fantastic shots for sweet there!

Hi Gramps,

I've been following your 52 and you've had some great ideas.
Direction:- Like the way the corridor pulls you into the shot, even without the sign it shouts direction to me.

Fear:- love this one, made me chuckle.

Sigh:- I prefer the second image, I think it would have worked alot better if there was a bit more interest in the sky..maybe a few clouds?

Sweet:- Well done for asking to photograph in a shop, I think this works really well, good job.

All the best for week 5:)

Carol

Great DOF and colours great idea and well done taking it hand held.

Still trying to catch up with the vast number of threads, so apologies for not seeing yours earlier.

Direction, absolutely loving the processing in this, excellent pic.

Fear, really made me smile. Cracking shot and dof.

Sigh, a hard week for everyone this one. The second shot is the better, but not keen on the processing on that one. Maybe b&w would be better.

Sweet, fair play to you for going into a shop and asking to take pics. Excellent shot too.

Looking forward to seeing more of your 52

Nice and clean shot. Great DoF. Well done :D

Hi Gramps....continueing my trawl through the posts to try n catch up !

Sigh....good idea ...all crit has been mentioned but you had the idea...just needs a bit of fine tuning

Sweet......well done you for getting out there & in to shop...takes some bottle but most places are quite happy to help....last year I ended up in the local fire station , a Porsche dealership & the local taxi rank !

Given the lightng & hand held situation I think you've done really well...good angle & the word chocolate on the ribbon is just about in focus so right on theme...great stuff

As many have said, great dof. And props for asking the shop, that takes some confidence and doing something new is part of what this is about:)

Well done for sweet, you have steadier hands than mine!

Gramps, Trying to catch up on a few comments.
I like the feel of direction, your take on emphasing the length of the corridor with the sign is just right.
Fear - excellent idea, how many have a fear of height.
Sigh - This was one of the ideas considered but thought it would be difficult to show. The bleakness of your second picture does the trick.
As already said, the DOF works and very brave to do this in public.
Look forward to seeing more of your work

Sorry for not stopping by sooner. You've got some nice images here Gramps, I particularly like the Fearful Monkey. Excellent idea and really good take on it. The Sweet is nice too, with the dof taking you into the port & cranberry.. Yum.

This week's theme allowed me to challenge myself once again in being a little 'braver' in taking pics, last week it was going into a shop and asking to take some pictures of their chocolates ... this week was something a litle more challenging.

I arrived at HMP Bristol when a shift change was taking place so there were prison staff leaving and the place is bristling with CCTV cameras. As I stood at the front to take the pic I was alongside prison staff who seemed to be watching my every move and I felt that every camera on the building was trained on me

So this week it's not points for quality, it's points for bravery! :D

Well this shot screams 'secure' and is about as on theme as it gets:thumbs:

The post on the right is perfectly straight and everything is in focus. I'd suggest maybe cropping the left slightly to cut out the gate right in the bottom corner and part of the tree so you start with the prison sign.

Otherwise 10/10 for bravery. This is not an area where people like photos being taken, it makes security personnel nervous!!!

So Gramps were you on your way in or out? :D Stop on theme. ;) 10 out of 10 for bravery.

Spot on theme, the writing on the middle right just takes my eye thou.

Sigh – I’m afraid it doesn’t do anything for me

Sweet – Great shot with good use of DoF

Secure – Definitely secure. It’s funny only earlier this evening I was trying to remember the name of the prison in Porridge (HMP Slade)

Hi Gramps, sorry I have not been back recently but having a heck of a time trying to get around everyone in a week.

Direction - Thought I had commented on this one, I love it. The lighting is great as is the subject. I can't get enough of abandoned buildings.

Sigh - Really like the thinkning but agree something missing in execution. Would be a strong candiate for a reshoot card though as the thinking behind it was solid.

Sweet - Excellent, love the DOF, lighting, colours and the way it fits the frame. Could see that being used as an advert :)

Secure - Got to say you have got bigger stones than me lol, no way I would of taken that picture..lol

Fits the theme perfectly, just hope they don't have an escape anytime soon and nab you for casing the place..

Excellent work buddy, be keeping a eye out for future weeks :)

Hi Gramps

Sorry for not dropping by sooner. Falling behind in viewing so I am being selective.

Sweet - good idea and composition. I think that the very first part packet on the left, without the gathered top, unbalances the shot but otherwise good focus point and good dof. good colours.

Secure - well what can i say but what time is visiting?:D

You must have balls of steel ;)

I know I wouldn't have dared to  Couldn't be more on-topic though!

Hi Gramps,

You'd never get me to stand outside Saughton taking photos! lol You do get full marks for bravery. Well done.

Carol

Thanks guys and gals, it's difficult keeping track of everyone isn't it :D
I must have looked very furtive as I approached the prison in a roundabout way but when the PO's suddenly came out I couldn't believe it!

Did any of them actually stop you and ask what you were doing?

This week's theme of 'sweet' did make me do something I have not done before which was to walk into a shop and ask if I could take some photos. Surprisingly there was not much light in the shop and as the camera was hand-held it's not as sharp as I would have liked, however it helped me realise the importance of lighting and/or a tripod in these situations.

I think you did well there for hand held, really like the shot.

Like it, I've been thinking along similar lines with Bedford prison when I get my bum in gear!

Good to see you're not posting a "prison officer told me it's illegal to take pictures" thread

Good work Gramps and bang on theme. I'm surprised that no one challenged you.

'Welcome' is a bit of an oxymoron isn't it !

Great idea. Don't know why you were afraid though, the sign clearly says "welcome", is there another one on the way out asking if you enjoyed your stay?

lol I was planning to go to Broadmoor today but google street view shows nothing but a high wall - anyway, if this was my pic I would have cropped out all of the RHS and put more emphasis on the barrier and sign :)

There was something about the 'No Entry' that I found appealing :D

you mean the spikes? one would hope it would be 'no exit' lmao

Hi,

I was sure I had commented on your thread pal but obviously not, sorry for that.

My fav would be weeks 3 and 5, you can't get any more secure than a prison lol.

Matt
