Google street view, why?

Moved to Out Of Focus, as I am assuming you are not wanting to discuss the photographic nature of it, more its general existence.

I found it useful once. There is a street in Glasgow that has four shops that sell fire places. we went looked at them all and than decided on the one we liked the best when we went home. could not remember the name of the shop so used google street view to locate it read the phone number from the shop window and ordered it!

Order than that is "just for fun!"

Fair enough, that's a useful reason, but why residential areas?

You might be looking to buy a house in a certain area or book into a B&B etc. Could be useful in giving you an impression of the location.

I remember wishing it was in the area I was looking to buy my house in.

And come to think of it I used to describe the exact location of an indecent on the motorway I had to describe the the insurance company.

its like being a tourist without leaving your house and getting caught up in traffic, paying congestion charge or even petrol money. Also good for finding addresses if you need to go somewhere you havent been before, and you at least have a good idea of what the location looks like, especially if you are a van driver (used to be) and you were always getting lost or couldnt find a street. You could google street map it and realise what the place actually looks like

It's so we can all be lazy and view the world from our computer screens, interact with friends on skype so we don't actually have to sit near them, do our grocery shopping online at Asda and our gift shopping on amazon, while household items come from argos online, clothes from littlewoods and instead of ever seeing a doctor, self diagnose everything by googling symptoms

You got pm, email, twitter facespace world im msn etc.

Read a Sci-fi novel by Asimov many years ago (one of the I Robot or R Daneel series) where people stopped meeting face to face except for sex and, they used computers to chat and robots to go out for shopping etc.

Worrying thought isn't it?

I use it to help plan my away-days. Like today when I went from near Cheltenham to Manchester, Huddersfield, Wigan, Widnes and Bromyard. A total of 8 stops. Using Streetview, I can get an idea of the sort of property I'm visiting (so there are no surprises - like a block of flats when I'm expecting a semi-det) and also look for car parking issues.

That sounds like the plot in the Bruce Willis film, Surrogates.

This is all very well, but I need to placate Mrs Treeman who is currently having seizures at the mere mention of Google. She is absolutely convinced that some scally burglar is now eyeing up our house planning to burgle it. :bang:

Interesting a google shows "surrogates" to be a comic book series writen in the last 5 years on which the film you refer to is obviously based.

Here is wiki page on the Asimov novel written in the mid late 50's.

Quite a similarity it seems.

Best you get yourself outside and disguise the front of your house then.

Mines quite boring but they have got my Dad up a ladder

Also i agree about the caravan owners, I had a quick look locally and there are some very nice caravans in such a small area.

I quite often use it for work, it can save me having to do a site visit.

I think its absolutly stupid of people saying that google street map is a tool for burglars to find rich houses. After all whats stopping them walking or driving down your streets to check you out or is your house cloaked by invisibility and only visible via google street maps

Her argument was that they no longer have to leave their home to do that. They can just Google away a choose the best from the crop. Ironically if you look at our tiny house it would probably be the last place you'd think about breaking into. :)

i use it sometimes to see what a street i am going to looks like so i recognise where i need to be along that road, high streets for example, makes life easier.

In all honestly I use it when i am in work so that it entertains me while getting verbally abused by unhappy holidaymakers! :D

Round here there are a row of houses whose gardens back on the long driveway of a farm, it's private and marked as such and only goes to the farm yet the Google car drove right up it and photographed the back garden of every house. You can (or rather could, as I got Google to remove it) zoom in so far as to be able to tell what kind of locks are on the doors and in a couple of cases even what was on the tv.

Anyone walking past my house can see what sort of lock I have and what I have on the TV. I have asked them before to remove that memory, but it seems they just aren't as obliging as google :(

We've used it quite a lot lately as we're in the process of buying a house. (Used with google earth) it's saved a lot of wasted time in viewing properties that wouldn't have suited us. My husband also uses it to find a venue before he plays there with the band.

But generally speaking, I think that it's great just for having a neb.

i think its ace !

im moving to lincolnshire in *hopefully!!!* 2 years :D so i want to view places before i go as well as visiting them in person! its jsut great!

Its great for snooping! And the occasional funny shot...

Good for looking at our old houses & current.

I like it.

Hopefully they will update images on regular basis.

You can see the reflection of the camera car in our front window. Should I be worried in case some scrout thinks it is in our house?:)

How else would you find Where Mario and Luigi went in their retirement

I thought I would give the "every" street thing a test other night - and tried some fairly remote houses of friends in Scotland............ by remote I mean nearest post box 8 miles away remote...........

Yep they were there!

Kind of thinking what a fun job to do............ drive the google car......... Have already applied to do Cape Town!

Do they normally walk through your back garden though? I can see the arguement for pics of the front of the houses, but not for going up a private driveway to take pictures of people's back gardens.....

I find it very useful indeed, as a terrorist I no longer need to got out with my dslr and telephoto lens where I maybe stop by a police officer, I can now plan my attack from the privacy of my hide out.

OH and all the scallys now know I leave my windows open while at work :shake:

It's handy for finding areas with lots of prostitutes but it's a bit annoying they blank the faces out because i can't see if it's worth the trip or not

The people on this site are awesome lol.

Those prostitutes faces are not blanked out, they have been worn out from constant skull *********
