Goodbye

I considered doing this but I prefer the canon feel and look over the nikon. I'll wait for the 5Dmk2 next year, I'm in no hurry for it

- AEB only goes up to 1 stop either way, not 2 unless you take 5 photos. Thats going to take a bit of getting used to and hopefully it won't cost me any possible HDRs. When I get the grip it'll go up to 8fps and should be fine.

Congrats on the D700, they're a nice bit of kit - just need to get out and about with mine a bit more :(

As for 8FPS, theres always this........

Works a treat, and should keep you going until the grip arrives.

Looks great but it says "it is not bracketed" which is a shame as thats what I needed it for really :)

Remember the phrase "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"

All you Canon users defecting will be sorry soon when Canon reigns supreme AGAIN !!

Just like Liverpool FC when we win the premiership this season :-) come on you reds!!! (and Canon)

I don't see it happening any time soon. They can't launch a FF body with better AF than the 5D2 and the ISO support of the 5D2 for less than it. They have the 1D3 if you want better AF and the 1DS3 if you want better AF & FF. So they may make a 1D4 with FF, better AF and better ISO and then a 1DS4 with stupid MP and such. Whatever they do I think they're stuck and won't be able to offer a D700 like model for under 5D2 prices.

Page after page of moans about when your 5D Mk11 was going to arrive and how others had no hope of getting theirs before you.........

.......then you buy a Nikon, dearie, dearie me!

Hope you enjoy it and are we getting colour shots now?

haha :p I didn't moan that much. Anyway, they should be pleased as they've moved up in the queue now :D You'll still be getting plenty of b&w :p

But in my heart I wanted a Canon D700 and I have done for months. Everything was just so right, just what I wanted in a camera.

I Assume that was a typo Pete, or did I miss something ?
Anyhow
Good luck with your new toy (s)

I've gotta admit, on a lesser scale my D1x feels better and seems to produce better results than my newer EOS400. I'm now eyeing a D2Xs and am moving rapidly away from Canon!

Looks like a man thats weighed up the options to suit him enjoy :)

I hear Joe has a Nikon...

Pete,

Nice one.

Good decision and a business based one at that, not about being a fan boy. Enjoy your new kit, I am sure it will yield some stunning results. Looking forward to seeing them.

Pete.

As I said on Twitter Pete, welcome to the dark side... :D

Gonna be interesting what happens with Nikon lens wise now. They have everything any tog could want now other than some sexy primes... I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with they must have some in the pipeline.

After shooting a few shots with a D3x today though, I reeeeeeally want one of those too

Pete

Canon has lost another! Booooo! /canonfanboy

In all seriousness, looking forward to seeing some new stuff Pete, I wonder if we'll see a big difference?

I think you'll see sharper shots, and perhaps better due to nicer ISO performance and depth of field. I myself have already noticed a definite difference in quality, even just on the LCD. Its sexier. Probably would have got the same look on the 5D2 but who knows. This is the look I wanted though. Its the leap I've been after all year. I'm trying to work but I keep picking it up, taking a photo of myself and going "Oooooh its so nice!" Image quality wise :D

I took a look at the shutter on my 30D just now. Its stuck closed and looks bent or warped!

Oh and I do seem to be noticing some white balance issues. In my room I'm coming out very yellow / orange due to the lights. Its lessened with the flash but still off. Earlier when I took a shot of my laptop it was very blue, odd blue.

Oh and I love that you can process in cam. "Hows that in b&w? *click* or sepia, or adjust the white balance or whatever" Brilliant!

THe auto white balance is one thing that isn't 100% IMO. I have to correct it quite often. It's not a lot out, but a tad.

you've been fullframed

The 5D did it for me a long time ago, more recently the D3, I'm certain its 90% the sensor size making the difference, and 10% new tech.

I would imagine its quite difficult to go back, in the same way going back to 35mm from 6x6 is difficult.....difficult in that it ain't never gonna happen type difficult.

Yer. I set it to indoor lighting and it was spot on. Auto was very yellow. Seems that auto isn't as good as Canon's auto. I could leave that on auto all the time. I do shoot in RAW so its not a huge issue. I just like to see that the shot is right on the display.

Did you get NX2 with it as well? That really makes the RAW files sing. I've lost my serial number so I'm probably gonna have to buy a copy now ( I've turned the house upside down almost literally trying to find it ) as I had a HDD crash and have had to re-install everything. But it's worth the hassle of learning NX. I use Aperture for most stuff but have began to use NX2 ( well was doing ) more and more.

I got a demo I think. I might have a look but I love Lightroom too much.

I think you got the full thing, or you should have done as its a promo at the minute. Hey if you do and you don't want it I'd buy it off you

They released a fireware upgrade for the D300 not long ago which updated the Auto WB - it was pretty good on the D300 before, its now bloody ace! Hopefully they will do the same for the D700.

Ah cool. Its definitely not right. Photographed my Dad's Macbook in the living room, yellow. Its not yellow! Set to indoor, perfect.

DPReview have the same issue. It seems they took the auto WB from the D300 not the D3, at least thats what DPR think. You can see the problem there. Its shockingly bad. I don't like the idea of having to carry a grey card after all these years of not needing one.

Sorry to go slightly off topic, but how to ruin a perfectly reasonably argument!

Back to topic: Congrats Pete. Have fun with the new toy, and welcome to the dark side! :D

But you're a raw shooter aren't you? So you still don't need one :D
Although I find with my 40D I'm *always* adjusting my WB in Lightroom (although Ive been doing mostly indoor shots, and the Auto does *not* like those, whatever the indoor light source).

Ditto what Foggy said on the auto white balance. I hardly touch the raw WB dials since the recent firmware upgrade. Hopefully, you'll get the same treatment soon. Don't hold your breath though, updates aren't every month.

I am, but when I look at the LCD I want to see that I got the shot right. I don't want to see that I came close and have to fix it later. Really hope they do fix it. Who knows, maybe it will make me a better photographer now I have to think about white balance...
