Goodbye

DPReview have the same issue. It seems they took the auto WB from the D300 not the D3, at least thats what DPR think. You can see the problem there. Its shockingly bad. I don't like the idea of having to carry a grey card after all these years of not needing one.

Does auto WB bias to a certain end of the temperature spectrum each time Pete or is it completely random?
The reason I ask is that there quite good alternative bias with the WB on D300, D700 and D3's. You can add more magenta, blue, red etc.
I dunno if I'm dribbling like a cabbage here, it's early and the coffee machine is still in progress. Apologies if I fail to understand and offer nothing but slobber.

Hmm. My D300 was always too blue. Mind you, that was outdoors. I don't do much indoors.

They're alwys too yellow.

Hmmm, in that case then the bias with WB should help a little. Go into the 'Shooting Menu' and then 'White Balance', I'm pretty sure that even with the AUTO setting you can bias it by selecting it and then fiddling with the colour chart.
It should even give you a little number reference to the left of the screen so you can see what your changing and make note for future reference:
1 click toward blue and 1 click toward magenta = B1, M1.

I only have my D200 with me at the mo and it doesn't have this option, my better camera is back home but I'm pretty sure there is the above facility with auto WB.

Let s know

Ah thats very cool. Ok just to test something I tried a shot with my 10D, 50mm. Same lens as on my D700 but obviously the focal length is different. Both set to auto white balance. Taken in my bedroom with standard indoor lights and the curtains open a bit. 10D had my face as yellow and the area on my face lit from outside as more white. D700, pracitally the same. I think its new cameraitis :) Seeing problems that aren't there just because its new and its easy to worry over the possible differences.

I've had those exact anxieties about the brand spankin new macbook pro I bought just over two weeks ago, the blummin thing has a fair few bugs but it appears that there are all software related and will be cured with fixes or updates, it's taken me a while to accept that the issues aren't hardware related. I still worry.

Anyway's the WB feature is pretty damn hot though isn't it! It helps tremendously for me shooting in poorly lit ice halls, I just make a note of the bias and tap it in upon arrival. Pearler!

Yer its all so silly. Its just that nervous worry that you've done such a bad thing, stepped away from what you know and its all wrong! OMG ITS ALL WRONG!! COME BACK CANON!! But its not, its fine. I know plenty of awesome professionals who shoot Nikon and plenty on here that take great photos with Nikon.

14-24 arrived. That is sharp. Its like as sharp as my 10-20 is at the center but at the edges. i'm hoping this nice light stays around today for when I go out and play. My 430ex's lightsphere sort of fits the sb600. Its not 100% but I think I can fix that with some velcro. I wish I could find my old stofen to test the difference. Definitely noticing a shadow at 24mm with the 24-70. I'm using CMDR mode with the sb600 sitting on my desk but I'm sure the on cam flash is firing and causing this problem.

One of these will fix that... (P/N SG-3IR)

Quick shot with the 14-24mm.

Is that... like... erm... those rays of light... a halo above your head!? And there was me thinking the sun shone out of your <snip>

You don't have one of those? Its an after glow from too much HDR :D

Quick shot with the 14-24mm.

Sharper than A-line flares with pockets in the knees!

...and at 14mm too! :naughty:

(grabs paper and pen)
Dear Santa,
I have been very good this year, this Christmas, I would like a Nikkor 14-.....

I almost wish my 40d would break, I wanna jump ship too ^^ Congrats on the purchase!

As a regular top gear viewer, dunno :p Bad hair? He's hardly the sort of hamster I like to pet :p

Either the puffy cheeks or the just been in a car crash look

A hat won't help with my apparent new found hamster complextion :p

boozers nose blowout....:D

I've always found auto w/b completely unreliable on any camera.
Call me old fashioned but I just choose the correct w/b in camera before I shoot, infact I hardly change it from flash or 5500K unless I'm indoors or if the light is particularly silly looking.
Its never much more than a gnats cockhair out > quick raw twiddle for perfection.

good choice tbh pete, the D700 is a fantastic camera, been working a little bit with a photographer using a d700 recently and the results are very good :) For what you shoot the D700 is indeed probably the best choice.

Tom.

*jealous*

I was going to make a comment about "how can you afford to throw that sort of money around!?!"
It's like, yeah, ****** it, only £300 more! bargain price!
But then it hit me, photography is your profession. It would be like having a go at a horse breeder for buying a horse :p

Enjoy it Pete, it's a cracking camera.
No 5D mk2 though ;)

:naughty:Very good choice Pete. Have used Nikons for 15 years now and never regretted it. Canons are just wronguns......(dons tin hat and dives for cover)
